The Dangers of Self-Medication
"Do you know the damage you have done to yourself?" Tayo's uncle bellowed at her.
"Renal failure! That is what the lab reports says". Tayo looked at him with tears in her eyes.
She knew she should have told him the first time she had started having vagina discharge, he was their family doctor. But she did not. It was just too private. So she had turned to her friend, Yvonne for help.
"Take these antibiotics tablets and then insert this down there every night for seven days" Yvonne had said to her handing her some drugs.
"Are you sure this would work?". She had asked quietly.
"Do you not trust me again? This was what the I did when I had those same symptoms, and it worked".
She had followed Yvonne's prescription for seven days without any improvement.
When she complained to her, Yvonne had produced another set of drugs which she decided to try.
If only she knew!
Now her uncle had just diagnosed her with acute renal failure!
Just like Tayo, so many of us take self medication for granted.
It is worse in Nigeria and other developing countries because there are no strict laws stopping people from acquiring drugs without a prescription.
We start experiencing a little symptom and our first thought is getting drugs to treat. Some people actually think the hospital is meant for life-threatening cases alone!
Do you know that when you take drugs without a doctor's prescription (self-medication), you could misdiagnose, abuse drugs, cause harmful drugs interaction, damage your vital organs and so much more?
Sadly, the dangers of self-medication sometimes extends to an offspring. I had a friend who had to wear braces for the first twenty years of her life just because her mother took a drug she was not supposed to take during pregnancy.
Stop Self-medication.
Consult a professional first before taking any drug. It is even easier today to do so.

In some situations, people thinking themself as a home-Doctor so they turn to take self-medication. Really, in some family, the self-medication extends to offsprings that's very dangerous. Your story is very nice. At the end you have given good advice and suggestion. That's great!
