TEARS OF BLOOD- THE LASSA FEVER STORY

LASSA FEVER is an acute, often a fatal viral disease, with fever.

However, Rodents are mainly the cause of Lassa virus as the Multimammate Rat of the genus Mastomys, though it is not certain which species of Mastomys are associated with Lassa fever.

What the general public should do:

1. Block all rat hideouts
2. Cook all foods thoroughly
3. Cover all foods and water properly.
4. Keep your house and Environment clean
5. Store foodstuffs in rodent proof containers
6. Avoid contact between rats and human beings.
   Among others

Of the symptoms of Lassa fever are:

1. Abdominal Pain
2. Back Pain
3. Chest Pain
4. Conjunctivitis
5. Cough
6. Diarrhea
7. Facial Swelling
8. Fever
9. Mucosal Bleeding
10. Proteinuria

WHAT THE HEALTH PRACTIONERS SHOULD DO TO AVOID THIS “TEARS OF BLOOD”

The health workers should as a matter of urgency follow the safety tips of health bodies to the later.

When Health-care workers see a patient suspected to have Lassa fever, they should immediately contact experts for advice and for arrangements for laboratory testing.

Health-Staff should always apply standard infection prevention and control precautions when caring for patients irrespective of their presumed diagnosis. That is, they should among others observe basic hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, use of personal protective equipment, safe injection practices and safe burial practices.

How would the general public be safe when the health workers are not safe? Hence a call on the health workers to at all times observe safety tips, including but not limited to; putting on Safety goggles and face shields, Plastic safety goggles, Surgical caps, Masks, Gloves, Scrubs, Surgical gowns, Surgical sleeves, Coveralls or jumpsuits, Shoe covers, Lab coats, etc. for their safety to prevent this TEARS OF BLOOD! Trust no one to be free of this virus, until tested and declared free!

Prevention is better and cheaper than cure; act safe.
