Aching head with 38.5 °C body temperature?
Well, a pop of Tylenol may do.
A one-week-old cough with fever?
Not a problem! An old antibiotic prescription is perfect!

Heard those lines above many times before? If maybe they're doing all of these more often so then they're getting into a bad habit of self-medication. Just like those other educated people who feel like popping various kind of pills without any doctor's prescription.

That's why as a registered nurse here on the Philippines I always see to it that my family and other acquaintances should know how harmful self-medicating is. And coming from a family with five members who are RN, we can't deny the fact that some of our relatives seek medical advises from us. There was one time when one of our neighbors came to our house late at night just to get help because her baby was having a difficulty of breathing due to a severe cough accompanied with high body temperature rate. She told us that she has already started the antibiotics 3 days ago, and that antibiotic prescription was her baby's 4 months old previous prescription. The baby was so pale, crying out loud due to chest pain every time she coughs out that sticky phlegm and having shortness of breath. After we did some short nursing assessment, we immediately call the emergency hotline for the ambulance to pick up us. So then the pediatric doctor explained to us that the baby was having severe pneumonia, the cough of the baby was not treated correctly and the mother gave the underdose dosage of antibiotic, that's why a normal cough with light fever worsen into a severe case pneumonia.

When a doctor prescribes antibiotics he will set pieces of advice not to skip a dose and complete the prescriptions with right amount of doses to a specific case. All of these is for the patient to completely recovers and protect people from antibiotic-resistant infections.

Appropriate antibiotic supervision will help preserve the effectiveness and lifespan of antibiotics.
