My junior brother Eric who is some months old developed watery diarrhea, six motions per day. My mother Mrs Ogbu gave her baby metronidazole suspension which we already have at home. My mother noticed that after using the drug for two days the diarrhea didn't stop, I escorted her to the pharmacy and we were given co-trimaxozole suspension for the baby.
Nevertheless the diarrhea did not settle. Two days later, Eric developed oral thrush, he refused feeding and his general situation deteriorated. My mother stopped the treatment and took him to a traditional healer,
, who cut his uvula after much persuasion from him. My brother’s condition got worse and was finally taken to the hospital where a specialist diagnosed him of sepsis with malnutrition and he was admitted for 15 days. The specialist introduced the proper management and counseled my mother on the dangers of self-medication, I was so ashamed of myself for not telling her to visit the specialist at first. The doctor also advised her on how to deal with such conditions if experienced in the future. I almost lost my only brother to self-medication but with God’s intervention it didn’t happen)

People self-medicate because it seems like the quickest thing to do when they need instant results. This is quicker than an appointment to start therapy.
