Firstly, What is Self-Medication: Self-medication is defined as the selection and use of medicines by individuals (or a member of the individuals' family) to treat self-recognized or self-diagnosed conditions or symptoms.
Several benefits have been linked to appropriate self-medication, among them: increased access to medication and relief for the patient, the active role of the patient in his or her own health care, better use of physicians and pharmacists skills and reduced (or at least optimized) burden of governments due to health expenditure linked to the treatment of minor health conditions.
However, self-medication is far from being a completely safe practice, in particular in the case of non-responsible self-medication. Potential risks of self-medication practices include: incorrect self-diagnosis, delays in seeking medical advice when needed, infrequent but severe adverse reactions, dangerous drug interactions, incorrect manner of administration, incorrect dosage, incorrect choice of therapy, masking of a severe disease and risk of dependence and abuse.

Types Of Self-Medication

We have Direct and Indirect Self-Medication:

Examples of direct self-medication include:

  1. Caffeine, nicotine, alcohol
  2. Prescription medications
  3. Over-the-counter medications
  4. Inhalants (legal or illegal)
  5. Illegal drugs
  6. Simple carbohydrates such as sugar

Examples of indirect self-medication include:

Adrenaline that can be released during episodes of anger or fear, competition, and high-risk activities

Endorphins and enkephalins that are released through: extreme exercise, purging (e.g., released during starvation, overeating, or vomiting)., high-risk behaviors and activities; excessive hand washing, religious obsessions including flagellation, sexual activity (estimates are that 80% of sexual compulsions are accompanied by another concurrent addictive behavior such as alcohol, work, or gambling).

Serotonin that can be released by eating specific types of foods, dopamine that can be released when an unexpected reward or a larger-than-anticipated level of an expected reward is received, oxytocin and vasopressin that can be released during sexual activity and/or by a feeling of being in love.

SELF MEDICATION IS DANGEROUS.... DO NOT TRY IT.
IT IS HARMFUL TO OUR LIVES
IT KILLS

Self-medication is quite dangerous, I've seen first hand experience of people who engage in some medication to get high. Thanks for sharing.

Educative but someone in his or her thinking should know self medication has its limitation. You see this advise in most drugs that are normally take that after 3 days if symptoms persist consult a physician
