Refuse Disposal, Waste Management And Your Health

Improper disposal of waste is something most people in this part of the world (Africa) still do though not limited to Africa alone but it’s just rampant in this part of the world.

I think the problem is inadequate knowledge of the dangers of improper waste disposal. Those that know the dangers don’t have adequate structure put in place to support appropriate waste disposal. They just do the normal thing the ignorant person does, drop the waste by the road side, burn the waste and anything they can think of so far the waste is not in their home.

What they don’t know is that they are causing more harm than good. Even if the waste is not in their homes they are not out of danger as these practices leads to environmental pollution.

A public health physician, Prof. Akin Osibogun said the direct health effect of improper waste disposal arise from excessive breeding of agents of diseases such as rats, flies and mosquitoes. Ref

It’s important to note that animals such as rats transmit diseases that affect humans and can lead to death. Disease such as Lassa fever, salmonellosis and the likes. Mosquitoes are known for transmission of malaria which is unhealthy to everyone.

This shows that not disposing your waste properly will not only bring danger to you but also to people around.

Infectious diseases are not the only effect of improper waste disposal as improper waste disposal can pollute the environment and contaminate water. Polluted environment and water has a negative effect on the health of humans, animals and marine life. ref

It could lead to accidents also; example if sharp objects are not disposing properly anyone or any moving objects can step on it and it can cause damage to them.

Improper disposal of waste also makes the environment messy!
We all don’t love a messy place nor do we live in a messy house, so why make the environment messy?
Why cause harm to the environment/Earth we all live in?
Why not take care of the environment like it has taken care of us?
Why not make it better place for the future generation?
We should all ask ourselves these questions
Regardless of the system we should find a way out, we should find a lasting solution to improper waste disposal
There is need to adapt the 3R`s REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.( there should be a way to simplify this that every lame man can do it)

If people will understand that by this single act(improper waste disposal) ,they are killing themselves, the environment and others little by little then I think a lot of attention will be placed on proper waste disposal. Which means there is need to educate people more on this issue.

Please don’t stop thinking on the solution to improper waste disposal and please in your everyday life endeavor to dispose waste right by doing that you staying healthy and saving a life indirectly.
