#AIR-CLINIC HEALTH TALK: Understanding How "Fertilization & Pregnancy" Occurs!
Hello Air-Clinicians & Friends,
Today we are gonna delve into a vital health topic that ensures the continuity of our species. Everyone knows about pregnancy but only a few understand the intricacies of fertilization.
WHAT IS FERTILIZATION?
By way of introduction, fertilization is the particular instant when the zygote is formed under enabling conditions from both man & woman (fertility). Fertilization leads to pregnancy. Pregnancy leads to childbirth.
Fertilization is the process whereby a functional spermatozoa combines with an ovum(egg) to form a zygote.
The Zygote when formed grows into an embryo and then a fully matured foetus as the pregnancy matures. There are many other stages the zygote has to pass through as cell division & cell differentiation occurs in utero.
Alot of the intricacies are way beyond the scope of this tutorial.
WHERE DOES FERTILIZATION OCCUR?
Recall that we mentioned the importance of 2 cells in fertilization. Spermatozoa- the male sex cell- & Ovum- the female sex cell.
The next question therefore should be "where does the spermatozoa & the ovum come from?" Sperm cells are produced in the testis of the man and deposited into the genital tract of the woman during sexual intercourse. Ovum on the other hand is produced in the ovary of the woman and is released during OVULATION.
Fertilization Occurs In The Fallopian Tube.
The fallopian tube is shown in the diagram above. It connects the ovary to the womb (uterus). What this means is that sperm cells once deposited has to travel (swim) their way up to meet the egg(s). On a lighter note, you see why males have to approach females?
Also, its actually a battle for supremacy. Millions of sperm cells released have to compete to get to the ovum first. He who reaches the pretty lady first wins. Lolx. Just 1 sperm cell is required to fertilize 1 ovum.
A wise sperm comes with flowers...
When they meet, they fuse together. I.e the sperm cell actually bores into the egg before fusion of the 2 cells happens. The sperm carrying X/Y chromosome and the ovum carrying X chromosome. Hence the sex of the baby is determined here also. (More on this in a separate health talk).
Viability is also determined by the strngth of the fertilization. A good healthy bond from a fertile sperm & egg gives rise to a healthy zygote which then also travels down the womb for implantation.
On the other hand, a non-viable zygote is flushed out naturally by the body as miscarriage.
