Future News: AI Conflicts Predicted in Future Cyber Wars

in #ai6 years ago

What kinds of applications will militaries find for AI in coming years and decades? Well that is a question that is on many technologists' mind as methods for creating advanced AI systems continue to progress.

This year's Munich Security Conference kicked off on Friday and set the tone for what researchers are going to be working on this year. The question of cyber warfare and how exactly artificial intelligence would be involved was heavily under discussion there.

Leading the debate was Estonian president Kersti Kaljulaid.

Many may not know this but her country was the victim of a massive hacking attack that was widely blamed on Russia.

“I have been really worried as an Estonian--Estonia is a digital state compared to many others--that our capacity to internationally agree and regulate for technological development has been extremely low," Kaljulaid told said. "We haven’t managed to do any progress, for example, even on cyber issues”.

Members of the public present in the audience said they are worried about robot soldiers, and self-piloted weaponised drones. NATO's former Secretary General Anders Fogh Rassmussen said it's a legitimate concern.

“The use of robots and artificial intelligence within the military might make the whole world more unstable. For that reason, I think we should elaborate an international and legally binding treaty to prohibit the production and use of what has been called autonomous lethal weapons".

Lets look at this closely and break it apart. Rassmussen said that we should prepare for the unexpected as this technology progresses. That seems like a pretty valid prediction right there. Furthermore he would like to see a treaty to prohibit the production and use of autonomous leathal weapons.

In theory this seems like a good idea as well but can we honestly expect governments to not conduct secret research in this field if it was to be made illegal? Couldn't that be a premise for a future false flag attack or pre-emptive strike on a country? I would be cautious when it came to moving forward on that reccomendation.

In an open letter to the UN last year, Robotics experts also called for a ban on developing so-called "killer robots" and warned of a new arms race. Earlier this week, the US Director of National Intelligence published the annual Worldwide Threat Assessment, which expressed concern about the "potential for surprise" in the cyber realm.

Clearly this topic of AI cyber warfare is going to heat up in the near future. We need to keep our eye on the ball here as reality could take a parallel track to a sci-fi movie like the Terminator if we don't pay attention and get organized on directing this development.

What do you guys think about the potential for increased AI and cyber warfare in the near future? Is there merit here or are we just being paranoid?

Honestly I dont think we can. Governments, of all sizes, have repeatedly shown themselves to be dismissive of agreements and treaties. The world is so divided that there are countries that will take the opposite side simply because of what another country does.

As for AI, this can bring wonderful advancements for humanity...or its destruction. We are walking that line. That is why it is encouraging to see projects such as OpenAi and SungularityNet are so important.

While I do not fear the Terminator scenario from the AI, I fear it from the humans controlling or developing the AI.

One thing about humans, we keep devising ways to kill each other more efficiently.

One thing about humans, we keep devising ways to kill each other more efficiently.

This seems to be something that humanity has been focused on throughout the ages. I wonder if the only reason we haven't completely destroyed each other yet is because of the new age of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction). If one side had an advantage over the other, I wonder how long it would take before they used it?

The scenario you depict is something that is happening and will happen. Machine learning being used to recognize military or civilian structures already exist. It's just a matter of time for the drones able to drop bombs can "decide" based on AI pattern matches. In a world where everything happens in a matter of minutes, a country delegating those decisions, at least to a certain extent, on an automatic AI can have a decisive tactical advantage in a fast-paced war. The answer is not whether or not that is happening but when, dismal as that may sound.

Good questions. I think the whole secrecy aspect of the technology is concerning. People who have nothing to hide, hide nothing. Because this is such a serious issue, with potentially serious ramifications for ALL of us, we should be educated immediately regarding how advanced many of these systems already are. We, the people of the planet deserve to have a say.

I had reason a few years ago to research patents, and I was SHOCKED at what already existed, in terms of mind-blowing technology. The technology exist, at this moment, to cure so many of the world's ills, and that isn't what they are being used for...so at what point will that change?

Sooner or later, the human soldiers will be replaced by robots and wars would be controlled by human and not fought I guess. The defense field can be revolutionized by the use of robots.

I agree with your reply.. I was just about to say the same thing.. robot soldiers are coming.. just look at the drone the USA use now.. that will be nothing.. I also think we could see Robot AI police officers int the future..

Exactly sir. Thanks for the comment

wooo a very sophisticated technology, amazing as time goes by

This is an awesome article,.... sadly it’s fast becoming a reality

I agree with time this will happen

Everyone knows that these clowns say one thing in public and then do the opposite behind closed doors...You want proof? There is an endless trail of Historical facts.

In other news, the Martian Foreign Affairs Minister today confirmed that they were the victims of an organised 'russian troll' network and hack of their Information Awareness Office. They blame this on Martian hate/trans-phobia and 'fake news'.

Ahhh yes another victim of Russian hate and hackers. Maybe the obvious culprits of all these hacks are the NSA, the same people who love the AI technology, and want this to be used as weapons.

This is a great idea
