It’s been a wild couple of days for the Quopi team and especially the IT department who has been working tirelessly to mitigate one of the biggest attacks we have ever experienced. It started as a very calm day with little activity and our automated system chugging along as expected and then suddenly, our preset alarms started going off signaling unusual activity in the refund portal, unlike the previous exploit that was a slow and gradual process, this new attack consisted of brutal hits after hits designed to penetrate our layered firewalls.

We started receiving threats but we didn’t take it seriously since we have received so much threats since the program commenced, not until the 21st of February 2024 when the attacks commenced and it was a blizzard!. The attacks were well coordinated and a lot of resources must have gone into it and so we knew there was only one logical reason why anybody would go to those lengths and it’s definitely so they can exploit the platform and drain funds from it. Fortunately we learnt our lesson after the last Exploit and we took steps to ensure that this never happens again and this is why we separated our financial infrastructure from the main platform, this means that even if bad actors somehow gains access into the main platform, they wouldn’t be able to steal any funds from the platform and they found this out the hard way after wasting so much resources.

We had some protocols in place for situations like this and we immediately swung into action, the first thing we did was to restrict access to the platform and this is why users noticed an outage in the platform, we immediately commenced the migration process to an alternative domain while we allowed the attackers continue wasting their resources to gain access into the platform, we could have easily announced the new domain but we decided to wait until they have wasted all their resources and when they realized that there was really no reward in the end of the labor thanks to our robust security system.

The Next Step

We have been able to prove beyond reasonable doubt that any attack on our platform would be a futile attempt and we believe that the message has been well received, we have moved the refund to a backup domain and the program would continue as it was, there would be no need to register afresh or complete KYC again as everything remains the same as it was before the exploit attempt. When we commenced this program, we were determined to work with a small team in order to keep our spendings as low as possible, this strategy has worked fine until one of the team members had a family emergency and had to resign so they could spend more time with their family, this has left us severely short staffed and since then, we have had to lock the telegram group because of a lack of moderators.
