In the last year, eight out of ten consumers said they were unlikely to shop again with a vendor after a poor delivery experience, up 34% in 2017. Quality of goods and customer service aside, e-commerce hangs in the balance of shipping and delivery; and consumers have high expectations.

In 2017 alone, US companies spent an incredible $1.5 trillion on their shipping and logistics needs just to meet their customers’ expectations – yet this may not be enough. Juggling inefficiency, excess inventory, over/underproduction, and supply chain miscommunication is often more than businesses can handle on their own. As AI gets smarter, it may hold the key to quality goods, happy customers, and truly sustainable commerce. While traditional operational practices ignore customer experience and are not always able to manage system-wide problems, a 2017 study has shown that 71% of retailers found that through AI, sharing vital data across all departments was an important move for their business.

Amazon seems to be a consumer favorite in terms of fast and free shipping options, but three out of four shoppers would still choose another retailer if they offered better shipping options.
