What Is the Singularity?

in #ai7 years ago (edited)

The singularity, or more precisely the technological singularity, can be most simply defined as the emergence of super-intelligence, i.e. a turning point in the course of artificial intelligence development where the intelligence of machines exceeds the highest level of human intelligence. Although various definitions have been proposed for the term singularity, it seems that the emergence of super-intelligence is one of the most important ramifications of this phenomenon.

The intelligence explosion

Consider an AI that is capable of designing a software system more intelligent than itself. Then the resultant AI will be capable of designing an even more intelligent software system. Some scientists believe that such a situation will lead to an explosion of intelligence.

This cycle will continue until the limitations of the laws of physics kick in and prevent further advancement of the intelligence level.

When will the singularity occur?

Although there are various opinions on this, but many scientists believe that the technological singularity will occur within a few decades from now. For example, Ray Kurzweil predicts that in a few decades, the computing power of ordinary computers will exceed that of the unenhanced human brain.

The impacts on human society

Although this topic has been frequently the subject of science fiction works, but many scientists have expressed concern over the future of AI and its impact on human lives.

If robots become more intelligent than humans, it may not be possible for us to understand the logic behind their decisions. They may choose goals based on their own understanding that may not be compatible with the values generally accepted by humans.

This is probably one of the reasons that some prominent scientists, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, have asked for setting strict regulations for AI research.

Hi Ghasem, the most interesting article to my knowledge, in-depth and extremely lengthy, about this topic, is found here on waitbutwhy.com , by Tim Urban. It covers about every aspect imaginable about AI, technological singularity and regarding Musk's company Neuralink an Open AI and how he perceives to keep-up with AI. More extremely interesting articles on the same, and corresponding, topics are fund on the same website as well.

I encourage you to read it, and I think you'll find it fascinating!

@scipio
PS, I miss your daily idioms. Will you bring them back?

Thank you for the link, I'll check it out for sure. About the English idioms, I have decided to explore other subjects. I also plan to create a course for learning the Persian language, although it will have a smaller audience.

Of course I'll follow your other content as well! :-) Also there are many idioms I haven't had the chance to provide examples to yet, but I could do so nonetheless! (Even though the post/article is old, I can still add example sentences for clarity, and you could post some new curriculum articles providing grouped links to your older content: I'd really like that, and encourage you to keep following my new examples on your older posts!

PS: I like your programming articles as well, as do I like articles such as this one on hypothesizing about possible futuristic events caused by - for example - AI advancements.
However, regarding programming: have you looked at Python 3? Its syntax is far cleaner, its use cases more broad and just as in-depth, and empowers AI development far better, than JS does. We could co-develop a Python tutorial series, for example...

love to read it

I once wrote an article in which I pondered what would happen when a technological singularity occurred.
Some people take the liberty of asserting that technological synagogue has already occurred. But I do not agree with these statements. Many scientists and futurists agree that technological synagogue will occur no earlier than 2045 or a term close to this date.
As there are many questions on the appropriateness of using strong artificial intelligence. Firstly, if he appears who and how he will be controlled.
At the first stages of its existence, it will significantly surpass all people on the planet. If we take it in comparison, we will be like monkeys for him. And is it a man with monkeys? No!
But strong artificial intelligence will be capable of continuous learning. Therefore, his mind will become stronger with every second. It seems to me that such scientists as Stephen Hawking and famous people like Ilon Mask speak about this.
Another thing is that supporters of artificial intelligence (transhumanists) talk about closer integration with the machines. That is, the merging of people with robots. Already, positive experiments are being carried out to introduce computer chips into the human brain, which greatly improve the characteristics of the brain (memory improves).
Therefore, as it seems to me, this is a very "vague" topic and no one will be able to say exactly how the events will develop. One thing can be said for sure - it will happen and there is little that can stop the rapidly developing technological progress.
And what is your opinion?

You have provided good insights into this problem. Even though there is a lot of disagreements on this topic, but its importance is undeniable and it will surely have deep impacts on our lives in the future.

you are a great guy

Well Agha @ghasemkiani i was relating this term Singularity being single or one who is not in any relation. But this aspect of singularity is quite new and innovative for me. I need more research upon this topic to know more about it how technologically it is possible for some gadgetry to surpass human intellectual.

Thank you so much for the worth reading blog

Stay Blessed :)

Most people in my generations saw the movie, "2001, A Space Odyssey " which shows Artificial Intelligence going haywire (Haywire - an interesting English idiom @ghasemkiani). HAL starts eliminating humans so he can protect himself and what he believes is his foremost mission. It actually was caused by conflicting instructions in his programming. This scenario has created fear in us humans. And I think rightly so.

What makes us human and different than a machine. It's not just intelligence and logic. It's that a human being has a Soul; has Consciousness; has feelings, love, compassion. Can this be programmed into a machine? I don't think so.

A quote from Rumi "“Know then that the body is merely a garment. Go seek the wearer, not the cloak.” i.e. The inner Self; the Soul.

On a Sci-Fi angle, can a Soul be put into a machine's cyber body with silicon chips as it's brain rather than a carbon based body and brain? Something to think about!

Thank you for your beautiful explanation.

you are great heart

Singularity will occur when you realize that you are a bot and not a human (and/or you are a human and not a bot).

Several writers conjointly tie the singularity to observations of exponential growth in varied technologies (with Moore's law being the foremost outstanding example), victimization such observations as a basis for predicting that the singularity is probably going to happen some day at intervals the twenty first century.

Probably one day robots become more intelligent than humans. we already got Shophia . may be one day Shophi demand her family. or they may set a new plan to destroy human .

Good Post, never heard it before.

well i have not read the post yet but i have saved this i wann read it with focus i am really intrested it it

Although I am totally blind in technology matters, just coming from the end user perspective here. I fully agree and 100% support those prominent scientists who well understood the consequences that can affect the entire humanity race in future.
