Ampalaya Vegetables or Bitter Melon

Ampalaya or " Momordica charanti" (scientific name) is a famous vegetable crop in the Philippines.It is called a bitter melon because of its bitter taste but contains nutrients vitamins and minerals.It is tropical plant originated in Asia, South America, and East Africa as well as in Caribbean country. It has green leaves that can use as foods and herbal medicine for many ailments. Ampalaya can be planted by its seeds.It grows to up to 5-meter in height with a fence to support the leaves to grow freely especially when it starts flowering and produce its fruits.Tie vines to your garden fence or trellis as needed during the growing season.Its need to water once a week but lessen during rainy periods and more during intensely hot weather.When the vine starts to bloom add some fertilizer. It can be cultivated and grow any time in winter, spring or summer season.It takes 8 weeks from the start of planting its seed to be fully matured. When the fruits are 4 to 6 inches long and the skin is light green it is a sign that ampalaya is fully matured and ready for pick up or harvest.

This Ampalaya or Bitter melon is fully matured and ready to harvest. We can see the fence made up of string that supports the vines and the fruits.It is essential in growing ampalaya plants to take care when it's already produced fruits because it becomes heavy so its needs fence to support from damage and falling down of the fruits.

This garden was found in our farmland. My father is fond of gardening and one the crops he planted is this ampalaya, not only for foods but it was sold per kilo in the market.

It was delivered in the market and some in the mall supermarket.

Ampalaya or Bitter melon is not cultivated just for foods. It gives more health benefits and herbals medicine.It is a plant used to treat people suffering diabetes, anemia, and skin diseases like acne or deep skin infection.The fresh pods can cure respiratory problems such as cold, asthma coughs.The juice of bitter melon can heal liver problems.It boosts the immune system.It is a source of Vitamin C and B complex like Vit B1, B2, and B3, while the vine shoots offer Vitamin A. It contains minerals like Iron, phosphorous, folic acid, manganese, and potassium.
