Dear Steemit friends, join me as I take you through the length and breadth of Africa as we look at the scramble for the soul of Africa.
Scramble for the soul of Africa is the scrambling of pre-colonial Africa by European countries. It started in the 1870s, and got to its cresendo in the late 1880s and 1890s.
During this harrowing days in the history of Africa, European super powers were jostling to possess the fecund and fertile territories in Africa. Most of Africans resisted the conquest and domimation by the Europeans.
It is important to note that, there was resistance in North Africa but by 1881, France succeeded and occupied Tunisia. Britain occupied Egypt, some territories in West and East Africa.
France also had what was termed "dual control" of Egypt. France also got most of the territories in West Africa. Germany held on to Togo, Cameroon and present day Namibia.
Between 1884 and 1885, the Berlin West Africa Conference was held and it had representatives from 14 European countries and the United States in attendance. In 1912 all of African territories was under the control of the whites from Europe except Ethiopia and Liberia.
Also these two nations were never colonised. Colonialism in Africa brought socio-political and socio-economic changes to Africa. Subsequently, these African territories under colonial rule started gaining self government and independence.
The effects for the scramble of the soul of Africa are:
*It led to total loss of control of their own affairs.
*It brought untold hardship to most Africans.
*Many Africans died while resisting the conquest.
*It brought about the westernization of African cultures.
*It developed the idea of nationalism in Africa.
*It heralded colonialism in Africa.

Scramble for Africa eventually culminated in the independence of 54 African nations.
