Aleksa's Book Review: Season of Migration to the North

I was told this book is the African take on "Heart of Darkness" where a Sudanese person experiences the west (or north) and returns to their homeland, only for it to change into what he experienced. It's a strange story that doesn't go linearly as one would imagine, and mostly has to do with conversations that men have in the village in question.

Entirely too much time is spent on the subject of fornication with women, in my opinion. Perhaps this is the book's way of explaining the down-going of Sudanese culture, but it is incredible to see just how much of the book has to do with what is between a woman's thighs. Then there's a twist at the end of the story that is foreshadowed, but still surreal.

I might not be smart enough for the book. Then again, it just might not be that good. In either case, I walked away with a somewhat increased understanding of the Sudanese culture and a bit more confusion than I'd like to admit.
