BIBLICAL MEANING OF AFFECTION

in #affection6 years ago

A strong, warm, and personal affection, as real friends feel for one another.

The Hebrew word cha · shaq', translated in Deuteronomy 7: 7 as 'showing affection,' has a root meaning "to be attached." (Ge 34: 8) The Greek verb phi · le'o translates as 'have love,' 'desire,' 'have affection,' and 'kiss.' (Mt 10:37; 23: 6; Joh 12:25; Mar 14:44) 'To have love' very close bonds, such as those that exist between parent and child in families with intimate relationships. So much love has been felt by Jesus to his friend Lazarus, causing him to "tear" when Lazarus dies. (Joh 11:35, 36) This same expression is used to show Jehovah's strong, warm, personal affection for his Son and his Son's followers, as well as the warm feelings of the disciples for the Son of God.

Notice that there is a difference between the Greek verbs phi · le'o and a · ga · pa'o, although many translators do not show such differences. (See LOVE.) Regarding the difference between these words, F. Zorell (Lexicon Graecum Novi Testamenti, Paris, 1961, No. 1402) states: "[a · ga · pa'o] is refers to a kind of love for a person or something that we feel willingly and according to our own desires because of the obvious reason; it is different [phi · le'o] because it implies a gentle and loving kind of love that we naturally feel in our hearts for relatives or friends, and for the things we consider to be pleasing.

It is noteworthy that these two verbs were used in John 21. Jesus repeatedly asked Peter if he loved it, using the verb a · ga · pa'o. On those two occasions, Peter firmly assured him that he had a love for Jesus, using his sweet words phi · le'o. (Joh 21:15, 16) Later, Jesus asked: "Do you love me?" And Peter again said that there was. (Joh 21:17) Peter thus assured Jesus of his warm and personal affection for it.

Brotherly love (in Gr., Phi · del · phi'a, literally, "brotherly love") must exist among all members of the Christian congregation. (Ro 12:10; Heb 13: 1; see also 1Pe 3: 8.) Thus, the relationships within the congregation must be intimately, strong, and hot as in a natural family. Although members of the congregation show that brotherly love, they are motivated to do so more. -1Th 4: 9, 10.

A person may be referred to by love of money (in Gr., Phi · lar · gy · ri'a, literally, "fondness of silver") and cause great damage to himself. (1Ti 6:10, Int) In the first century C.E., the Pharisees were lovers of money, and this was one of the identities of the people in the last days. (Lu 16:14; 2Ti 3: 2) In contrast, the way a Christian lives should be 'free from love of money' (in Gr., A · phi · lar'gy · ros, literally , "No attraction to silver"). (Heb 13: 5) In the Christian congregation, in order for one to meet the office of the overseer, one of the qualifications he needs to meet is "not lovers of money." - 1Ti 3: 3.
