Adventure #5 Dolphin Experience

Dolphins are amazing animals. They are intelligent, beautiful, funny and extremely playful. For my 5th adventure, I decided I wanted to spend some time up-close with them and learn more about these incredible creatures

Our adventure began with a drive down to the beautiful Florida Keys for a mini weekend getaway. We stayed at the Hawks Cay resort in Duck Key, about an hour north of Key West, FL. This is a family friendly resort with great accommodations, tons of recreational activities and some of the friendliest staff that I have ever seen at any resort around the world. They made our short stay very pleasant and enjoyable.

One of the activities that the resort offers is a Dolphin Connection Program. This program lets guests interact with Dolphins in several ways, from simply feeding them, to swimming with them and even being a trainer for a day.  I participated in the Dolphin Discovery program which is a 45-minute opportunity to touch, splash, swim and play with several dolphins in their natural habitat. To use my sons words, It was freakin awesome!

The program started with us being fitted for wetsuits and taught about the dolphins that we were about to swim with. We learned many amazing things about dolphins… Did you know that Dolphins shed their skin every 2 hours or that they live to be around 40 years old? How about the fact that they weigh over 500 pounds and average 8 to 9 feet in length? Those were just some of the many things we learned.

The time in the water was AWESOME! We fed the dolphins, swam around with them and got to take some great pictures. The 45 minutes flew by and we wished we could have had even more time.

After the dolphin adventure, we drove down to Key West, where we spent the rest of the day exploring that great city, enjoying the sights and having some great food (the key lime pie was the bomb!) This was the perfect way to cap off another great adventure.

This is one that we will have to repeat again!
