My story - and how Steemit helps to keep things flowing
I've been wobbling around the Steemit community for about 3 weeks now.
After some reading, well A LOT of reading actually, I decided to write my first post - my introduction.
Now that I'm reading it again, I realise how much is missing, so with this post I'd like to add the missing pieces.
Who I am
As I wrote before, my name is Miriam and I live in Ireland with my 4 kids.
Originally I'm from the Netherlands, but even though I don't hate my country, I've never truly felt at home there.
Maybe it's because between the age of 3 until I was almost 12 I lived in Germany with my family, maybe because I went to school in Belgium or I have travelled a lot, I'm not 100% sure, but I've always felt like and outsider in my own country and among my own people.
I like to call myself a world citizen rather than anything else.
not my actual passport
I studied hospitality because I didn't know what else to do, later I became a journalist trying to find myself, only to find I couldn't be further from myself and after I had my first two children, I studied to become a certified hypnotherapist.
I still felt I hadn't found exactly what I was looking for with these studies, and I wanted something else for my children.
What I do
Well, a lot of things. First and foremost I'm a mother. Being single, I also have to fill the role of the father sometimes. Something I never expected to do, but things just happened that way.
For 99.9% the kids only have one parent, so it's the way it is.
Three years ago, when my eldest daughter was 13, I decided that the best education for my children would be at home, outdoors, around the world and not in the confinement of a room inside a school.
We've never looked back.
We un-school and worldschool. So you might say I'm a single parent un-schooling worldschooler!
Not quite WORLDschooling yet, full on UNschooling
This month we are moving from the Mid-West of Ireland to our neighbour in the West: Beautiful County Mayo.
We are looking forward to the move, because it is a positive step forward, the area is absolutely stunning and we have even more space there than here.
Besides moving myself and the kids, and our possessions, I also have to move two ponies, two dogs and three cats.
This means a lot of organising, packing, dumping, driving and cleaning.
It's great! It's the best way of getting rid of unwanted and unneeded stuff. I'm a hopeless hoarder, not because I want to hold on to things, but because I'm too lazy to just go through them and get rid of them.
Every time I've moved during my life, I tell myself that the next time I just bring my kids, animals and photos, and every time I find myself taking off with boxes and boxes full of crap!
But moving also offers a great learning experience for us all. We learn to organise, plan, clear, clean, stack and build on our future together.
It's an awesome learning experience for us as a family and the kids get to see what needs to be done before the move can actually happen.
So in that way, we are full on unschoolers! My kids learn by doing what they like and doing what needs to be done for the best of us all.
We are not so much worldschoolers yet, but then again we did move from Holland to Ireland and now from one to the other place within Ireland, so I guess you could call us a 'moving (almost worldschooling) unschooling family'.
At the moment, we still depend greatly on shops for our daily necessities but I aim for a more self-sufficient way of life.
We have a huge polytunnel at our new home, that only needs the cover to get us going, there will be chickens and ducks for eggs and for sale. It's a great start and a window of opportunities is within our reach. I still want to help others with hypnotherapy, I'm looking into the possibility to open an online health shop and of course we would love to travel. But for now, our situation is exactly how it needs to be.
How Steemit is helping me to keep things flowing
Ever since I can remember, I've had many things to say, many stories to tell.
From the moment I could write, I would record endless accounts of my adventures, my friends and my family.
When I became disillusioned with the my job in journalism and journalism as a whole, I still had lots to say, but somehow the words didn't flow as they used to and I ended up drowning in my own writers block for almost 10 years!
That is - until I found Steemit. Things have changed now.
As soon as I started writing my first introduction, many, many other ideas sprung to mind.
I've been reading the work of many others, die hard Steemian Pros and newbies alike and every day that I come back here, it bring me new ideas, lessons and inspiration.
I've seen more than one person here give advice on how to get started and one of the things that jumped out, was the advice not to write about too many different subjects.
My first thoughts were: 'Oh my, how will I do this when my head is overflowing with information. I can't just write about one thing, or two!'
But then I realised that my work will begin and end with the one thing that is the most important for us: Our family and our lives as a family.
And with that comes home education, unschooling, worldschooling, health and how the world works in general.
Eventually it will all fall into place I am sure.
Congrats on finally overcoming your writer's block by joining this awesome platform!
Thank you! You're absolutely right: I love it here!
Love the post We homeschooled our daughter You are doing good very impressive!
Mahalo! Thank you for reading! This community truly amazes me. Such a fresh breeze compared to social media like FB. Great to hear your daughter was home schooled. How is she doing now? And what a place to live, Hawaii has always been my dream :)
My daughter got married and lives in here own house on the front of this property. Its 3 acres so she is almost a block away. My daughter and wife are into crafts so they are always making things . Its a good life Aloha!
Your MAHALO just drove tears into my eyes because you are the first non hawaiian (in this life of course and only divided by borders) I come across who just simply uses it! Mahalo nui loa my dear friend for finding me :) Aloha
I've always 'had something' with Hawaii, even though I've never been. It's a long story but I know what it is. Same here, we found each other :)
So specially for you I will write a post about my travel to Hawaii.
I'd love to read that!
Glad to have you here on Steemit. We are homeschoolers/worldschoolers too. We have been perpetually traveling for the past four years and it has been an adventure. It's cool to know that there are other worldschoolers here on Steemit. Best of luck with your big move. Looking forward to more posts. :-)
Great to meet you. What a great thing to do for your children: show them the world! There's no better education than that in my opinion. I'd love to hear your stories. Thank you so much for reading, I appreciate it more than you know.
Great to meet you too. We blog about our various homeschool projects here on Steemit, as well as our website (which is listed in our Steemit bio). :-)
I'm way ahead of you :) Already seen that. Great stuff! What a talented family! I'm sure you'll be doing great things.
Thank you! :-)
