Where do we even begin?

Earlier today, Pinkie-Pepper noticed a gar down at the lake. Then, @Papa-pepper saw a couple more. Tonight, we went out to try to capture them, but they are not all that we found.

First, Red-Pepper captured a small Northern Water Snake. It is nonvenomous, but even so the @little-peppers handle them carefully and control their head by grabbing their neck.

Next, Pinkie-Pepper captured a similar snake, about the same size. Her trusty sister was there to back her up.

As you can see from this close up, these are some pretty beautiful snakes with amazing patterns and colors, and we respect these creatures and enjoy admiring them.

Of course @papa-pepper had to get in on the action, and he caught a pair of larger ones. We got to watch one as it swam around underwater with an open mouth trying to capture fish for a late night snack.

The two big ones that @papa-pepper is holding almost look like they are modelling for the side of an ambulance, don't they?

After the brief photo shoot, @papa-pepper returned the bigger snakes to the water so they could get back to business.

We did enjoy posing with them first. Snakes of that size can look rather menacing and aggressive, but they mostly just defend themselves. As always, a good grip is key, just to be safe.

We did manage to catch a couple of gar too! These are a very strange fish, and we never saw any in the wild until moving to the Ozarks.

They get a lot bigger than this too, and we've even seen Alligator Gar before at aquariums that were over six feet long.

Before we left it was time for us to release our snakes too. They've got a niche to fill in the ecosystem, and if there are more out there now, then there should be more out there later.
