Polish Team is on its way to summit K2 Winter Ascent

Legendary Polish mountaineer Krzysztof Wielicki and his team set off to Pakistan to attempt the winter summit of K2, world’s second highest peak in January.

K2 is the last 8,000 to have never been climbed during the winter season, the second highest peak of the Earth. If the team succeeds, it will be the first in the history of mountaineering to do this.

The team is led by Krzysztof Wielicki, a 67-year-old climber who has scaled all 14 of the world’s peaks over 8,000 meters.

The expedition to the peak of the 8,611-metre tall K2 will go through four camps, the last of which is located at 8,000 meters.

The group has been at the foot of K2 since 9 January, when they completed the 100-kilometer trek to base camp at 5,150 meters. The team reached Camp 1, located at 5,900 meters above sea level on Tuesday after weather permitted.

This is the same Polish team that led the rescue operation on Nanga Parbat last month.
