Hiking Up Lion's Head In Gifs - Cape Town, South-Africa

in #adventure6 years ago (edited)

So this past weekend I was starting to get a little tired of sitting in a bar every weekend so I convinced an old friend of mine to go outside a little and enjoy mother nature for a change. We decided to hike up Lion's Head, the iconic mountain next to Table Mountain in Cape Town, since it's a relatively "easy" hike and offers a high reward when you get to the top. The initial plan was to sit on top and enjoy the sunset while having a beer but we left a little late so we kinda missed it by a few minutes but it was super rewarding nonetheless.

The hike starts off with a gravel road, don't be fooled, it's pretty steep and definitely feels like the most difficult part of the hike since it feels like it's never going to end.

At the top of the gravel road there are some nets where people usually sit and enjoy the sunset on summer nights. We decided to stop here for a bit to catch a breather, take some photos and prepare for the rest of the hike.

After the nets you gradually start climbing up the mountain following a winding path alongside the mountain.

Eventually you reach some chains and staples where you can skip a part of the path but unfortunately there were too many people coming down when we were going up so we had to take a detour. It wasn't all that bad since the view was amazing the entire time.

Eventually the sun set and it was getting pretty dark pretty quickly. We finally made it to the top at a total of 669.9m high.

Even though we missed the sunset we still got to enjoy the city lights while cracking open a cold one which was totally worth it at the end.

This a definitely a must for any tourist planning to come visit Cape Town. If you're a little braver than us you can always try hike up Table Mountain. Been there, done that and I'm not planning on doing it anytime soon. Table Mountain is definitely more challenging but way more rewarding.
