From my previous posts on SWOT analysis, it could be deduced that A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) analysis is often a necessary step at the start of any premeditated planning process. Careful analysis using the concept of SWOT is not only limited to business or organizational set ups but all endeavours where decision making is paramount.
A SWOT offers prodigious assistance in how a strategic plan is constructed, and keeping your SWOT up-to-date is helpful in ensuring that a plan stays relevant to the desired operation of the whole process.
Prudent and farsighted treatment of a SWOT in the planning process has the power to convert weaknesses into strengths and threats into opportunities during execution. In fact, this is exactly what your plan’s measurements should be communicating.

W is for WEAKNESSES

Within a SWOT analysis, weaknesses are internal factors that take away from your business or leave you at a disadvantage. Every individual, organization or venture has its weaknesses — things that they don’t do so well (or even do poorly), or things that aren’t so good about them/it. Weaknesses are principally noteworthy if they prevent you from achieving your ‘mission’ (even if that’s just earning money), or make doing so more difficult.

Consequentially, weaknesses are negative and internal — they cause harm (or prevent benefit), and are intrinsically related to how the organization is managed or the venture is realized.They are drawbacks or the area in which an individual or organization lacks thereby limiting the extent to which an individual or organization can go to achieve his dreams. “WEAKNESSES ARE LIMITING BUT NOT DENYING”. To overcome weaknesses, one should be practically and circumspectly farsighted in order to take an action to improve before the weaknesses start affecting the whole process.

HOW DO I KNOW MY WEAKNESSES????

To find out your weaknesses, sincerely without deception ask the following questions.
• In what areas do I struggle?
• What are your fears?
• Are there reasons that people select others over you?
• Does something specific stop you from performing at your best? If yes, why?
• Are financial resources holding you back? If so, how?
• Are you preparing for your future?
• What kind of human resources do you have to help in actualizing your dreams?
• Are there any constituent parts that are lacking or inefficient?
• Are there programs in place to improve you? If so, are they working?
• What areas could be improved upon when it comes to workflow?
• What plans do you have for growth?

PS: The questions are better asked rhetorically and critically meditated on and also answers to some can be gotten from your others opinions.

HINTS ON HOW TO LIST YOUR WEAKNESSES

  1. Be open-minded. Don’t limit the suggestion of your weaknesses to what you alone can think of, welcome people’s views about you, remain open-minded. It’s likely that your friend will bring up a weakness that you hadn’t thought of, or disagree with. When it happens, don’t be judgmental.
  2. Be critical of your potential or future engagement. Now isn’t the time for rose-colored glasses, now is the time for pure honesty. Be prepared to look at your plan inside and out critically.
  3. Remember, every man has weaknesses. When you’re finished talking about the negative aspects of yourself, you might feel a bit deflated. Remember, every man has weaknesses. Today is just part of a larger process that will help you better access your life.
  4. Keep your list of weaknesses handy. Keep your list in an accessible spot. You’ll analyze all of the data that you collect over the next few days at the end of the week.

I want you to know that no matter what your weakness is you can change it. If it’s truly a weakness you cannot change, the easiest solution is to surround yourself with people that excel in your weakness. If organization is a weakness for you, hire very organized people. If time management is a weakness for you, identify your highest priorities and schedule them into your day. We have solutions to each of our weaknesses, most times right in front of us. Quoting John Assaraf, founder of One Coach “hire people that play at things you are not good at”.

BOTTOMLINE: Weaknesses are negative, internal properties of all individuals, organizations and ventures. They warrant attention, as otherwise they can prevent the reaching of goals or realizing of missions. With SWOT Analysis, reflect on your newly discovered strengths and weaknesses, amplify your strengths and eliminate your weaknesses anytime.
