Reddit now tracks user activity by default

in #ads7 years ago (edited)

Since I've been posting a lot about Reddit lately and gotten some Steemians to sign up for it to check out our subreddit I felt the need to write this post.

I stumbled upon a post recently that alarmed users about Reddit's recent change where they track your account activity. Most of it is harmless of course since you have an anonymous account on the site and is mainly used to sell to advertisers so they can run better ads to you. It basically checks what you upvote, how often you visit certain subreddits, etc. They package all that information and sell it to advertisers who buy it so they can be more efficient with ads and that's what makes Reddit money.

It's an ad-filled world out there recently and all platforms rely on it. Even though it might be pretty harmless, I still find it deceiving since they haven't made an announcement or given away the fact that they do it on each account by default. To those who recently created accounts or have used Reddit from before, here is a direct link (if you are logged in) that you can use to uncheck all boxes and hit save.

This does not mean that Reddit will probably completely stop tracking your activity and use it for their gain, but at least you won't be seeing ads about crypto's all the time just cause you use those subreddits.

We should start setting up some ads up for Steemit on Reddit though, could be a good idea. What do you think?

I'm going to look over their advertisement program and fund some starting adspace if it looks like a good deal, we might need some new banners for it and slogans. Will get back with another post about it once I know more.

If we do this, we should try to find our Target audience which I feel would be people that put a lot of time into posts.

Perhaps places like r/dataisbeautiful where users post original content of data they have compiled. Sounds dumb but I find it fascinating.

Any idea of subreddits like this?

Any fear of bringing paid propoganda people? I guess that kinda comes with popularity though.....

This is now the third time in four years that I've had to turn this shit off.

Thank you

Still not as bad as Windows 10 updates.

I wasn't aware that they were doing this. It's interesting to see the kind of deceit companies whileuse for some small gain.

@acidyo it's really a very necessary info about Reddit. Although I don't use Reddit much( none actually) but I would really like to keep my privacy intact. And those adds are of course a nuisance not only on Reddit, but everywhere on the network called 'internet'😣......

I think it would be a great idea! I don't know what percentage of Reddit users are aware of Steemit, but it seems like it would benefit many of them to join Steemit!

I think it' a great idea to let the Redditors know that they have a better option in Steemit through ads.

I need need to sign-up.. i don't have an account in reddit.. I wasn't aware of it and it's interesting to see the kind companies while use for some small gain.

Reddit audience is probably just the type of crowd that will jump on crypto soon if they haven't yet. So, it will definately help to have steem introduced to them. Thanks for your help and jumping on this!

Was curious to know if Reddit awards users the same way as Steemit does or does it have any other Reward system?

Does it have a reward system at all?

It is not good to track user activities, but then this guys too have to make money with targeted Ads..We live in an economic planet!

Reddit tracking user activity will be a blessing to Steemit incase you decide to make Ads,imagine all those guys who upvote on crypto content seeing Steemit Ads...

It will be wonderful if even Steemit Inc utilizes this opportunity of Reddit Ads...
