Quick guide to protect yourself from Telegram scams

Have you ever received a Telegram private message from someone claiming to be the admin of one of the groups you’re in, asking for your personal information, or willing to pre-sell some tokens?

“Hi, I am XXX from XXX. As we are about to launch our ICO sale and since I’ve seen you’re pretty active in our group, I’d like to send you a special invitation to be part of our early birds ICO presale [LINK]”.

It may sound pretty convincing, especially if her/his profile picture has the official brand image (maybe, even the personal profile photo and the name of one the real admins), they know you’re interested in the sale, and they want you to get on board. Why should it be a scam?

Because she/he is not an admin, but a scammer.

Scammer: a particular species of sneaky fake 0o7, who promises to help you, support you, provide you with golden tokens before anyone else, before the company itself, a Popov of token sales, a double spy turning her/his back to her/his own company just to make you happy.

Unfortunately, scammers are not unequivocally scammers anymore, they are not that easy to detect, but as we are slowly approaching the very sensitive, yet eagerly awaited phase of ICO sale, we would like to warn you against them, specifically against fake admin offering early bird discounts, support, or sending false links.

They may even create alternative websites that replicate the official company website in order to carry out their evil plan and scam you.
The main question you need to ask yourself is “Is she/he a real admin?”. To help you answer it, we’ve created a quick guide for you to detect Telegram frauds and fake admins.

Hint 1: The grey admin badge

Does she/he have their grey admin badge next to her/his Telegram name? If the answer is no, then you should probably question her/his trustworthiness.

Hint 2: Read the group’s pinned message.

When you join a new Telegram group (but not only), read the pinned message. It usually informs about the group rules, relevant up-to-date info, and the official admin accounts active in the group.

Hint 3: Admin cannot PM you first.

If an allegedly admin PMs you first, then she/he is not an admin. According to Telegram regulations, admins are not allowed to be the first ones to text someone privately on Telegram; therefore, if they do, a bell should ring and you should move to step 3.

Hint 4: Check their username.

Fake admins usually steal real admins’ profile picture and name, but they cannot use the exact same username. Instead of @AjejeBrazorf, they may use AiejeBrazorf or @AjeieBrzorf. Therefore, pay attention to details, because they can save your wallet.

What should you do if you bump into a scammer?

Report their message to Telegram (right click on the post) and to the real admins of the group: they will make sure James Bonde is forever banned from the Telegram kingdom (or at least, from the group).

Hi @adrealm, I'm @checky ! While checking the mentions made in this post I noticed that @ajejebrazorf and @ajeiebrzorf don't exist on Steem. Maybe you made some typos ?
