RE: What is a good way to keep bread/「パンをどうやって保存するのがよいか」問題/My Actifit Report Card: February 6 2019
I think the oil paper (or just a normal paper bag) is definitely better than a plastic bag because it keeps the bread crispy. Bread in a plastic bag will get soft. Here in Germany you can buy special bread boxes for a lot of money. But you can simply store it in your cupboard - any not too big and not air-tight place will do. Essential is keeping the bread moist but not too moist: between drying out like when it's left on the table and the softness when stored in a plastic bag.
I still use a bread bag - old fashioned but it works. It's a small sack of natural fibers. Easiest is if you take a simple dish cloth, fold it in half and sew two sides together leaving an opening on a small side. If you sew a tunnel there for a cord you can close the bag. This cloth holds the moisture + keeps the bread from drying out. Make several of them and wash them if a bread is used up - that keeps the mold away.
Thank you for your wonderful advice.
I see! I did not think of a bread bag made of natural fiber cloth.
I have cloth of linen now. I will try to make a bread bag with your advice as a clue.
It is very delicate to moisturize the bread to an extent that it is not too wet.
The idea of the bread bag became very helpful! Thank you!
Is "special bread boxes" suitable for your comment like this picture?
This looks very convenient!
Yes - but like I said every place in that size, not airtight. You could use a big cooking pot with a lid or whatever you have at home.
Old kitchen cabinets used to have a metal clad cubicle for bread. But the metal was for hygienic reasons, nowadays we don't have mice in our houses. Any cubicle or box should work.
Thank you for further excellent advice.
I could not think of a way to utilize a large lidded pot.
It certainly is very hygienic and I can try it soon. That's a nice way.
I only baked a day's bread so far. Therefore, I had little thought about bread preservation.
Thanks to your comment, I'm looking forward to baking a lot of bread.
Thank you very much!
