With penrose or any other similar drains, it's vital to maintain a rigid wound care regime.
Otherwise, external pathogens may have an easy entry point into the body; which, of course, is the antithesis of why the drains were installed in the first place.

Thanks for your advice @jaichai. As far as I can tell they are planning on keeping him in the hospital, so hopefully they will take proper care. Both the abscesses they are draining are on the liver and they expect to keep the drains in for a couple of weeks. What a wild ride this has been.
