I'm sorry about your dad. It must have been hard, but you are right to say sticking together makes things work, and you can share the load; both the work and the emotion. I understand the pain of losing a parent. I was much older than you were, when I lost my dad and and 3 years later my mom. My dad's death was unexpected. It's never easy.
