Coffee Berry Borer ( Hypothenemus hampei)

Hello, family and friends hope you all are doing good? Alhamdulillah is a beautiful day. I want to talk about Coffee and the common disease that affect Coffee in the world.

The common disease that affect Coffee is the Coffee Berry Borer. The scientific name is Hypothenemus hampei.

         Introduction 

In many countries coffee production is severely threatened by number of pests and diseases. The most important is the coffee berry borer.
The Coffee Berry Borer or Coffee Borer Beetle is an insect found around the world and in most coffee producing countries. It is among the most harmful pests to commercial coffee plantations and can attack 50-100% of berries on a farm if no control measures are applied.

               Pest Biology 

The colonizing female bores a hole in the coffee berry and galleries in the seed where she lays the eggs. The female lays 2 to 3 eggs per day for a period of 20 days.

               Pest Damage 

The first sign of coffee berry borer attack can be seen at the tip of the berry, around 8weeks after flowering. A small hole about 1mm big is often clearly visible. The adult bores into the berry and, sawdust like material maybe pushed out of this hole.

 Key Management Methods Of The Pest

• One of the main IPM recommendations is to monitor and sample the crop, then spray a biological insecticide.

•Biological method - Using the natural enemies of the coffee berry borer to reduce the population. Pest management through biological control can utilize predators and parasites that attack the larvae.

•Coffee berry borer control has primary been based on the use of synthetic insecticides.
