in #aceh8 years ago (edited)

History has recorded that Ibn Battuta visited Aceh. The kingdom visited by Ibn Battuta called The kingdom Samudera Pasai. Now, this kingdom was not identified because it was not leave a trace. However, historians argued that the kingdom of Samudera Pasai located in the district of Samudera, North Aceh District, Aceh Province, Indonesia.

According to some historical literature that I found, Ibn Battuta visited Samudera Pasai in the mid 14th century. The story of his adventures to Samudera Pasai written in the reports of his journey.

Who is Ibn Battuta? According to wikipedia, Ibn Battuta was a medieval Moroccan traveler and scholar, who is widely recognised as one of the greatest travelers of all time. Over a period of thirty years, Ibn Battuta visited most of the known Islamic world as well as many non-Muslim lands. His journeys included trips to North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa, Middle East, India, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and China.

According Gade Ismail Muhammad (eds.) in his book Pasai dalam Perjalanan Sejarah, Ibn Battuta gave an overview of The Kingdom of Samudera Pasai in his report. He noted that he had to walk four miles by horse from the port to the city center. The city center was very beautiful and very large. Equipped with towers made of wood. The most important building in the city center was sultan's palace and mosque.

The above description was also similar to what has been written by Susanto Zuhdi (eds.) n the book Pasai Kota Pelabuhan Jalan Sutra. He wrote that Ibn Battuta arrived in Aceh (Samudera Pasai) during the reign of Sultan Malik Zahir in 1345. Ibn Battuta recalled that when he arrived at the port, people came who are in a small boat, carrying fruit and fish. Around the coast there are many homes. The distance between the beach and the town center just 4 miles.

Meanwhile, according to H. M. Zainuddin in his book Tarich Atjeh Nusantara, Ibn Battuta saw the progress of civilization Pasai. There have been circulating the culture of Persian, Arabic, and Gujarat. In fact, Sultan often invited scholars and poets to the palace. They provided religious instruction and reading poetry. At that time, art and literary has grown in Pasai. In fact, most people Pasai been able to speak Arabic, Persian, and Indian. In addition, Sultan was also often sent emissaries abroad to establish a relationship between the two countries.

From this description, we can know that Aceh in the past has made progress in various fields. Aceh is not only visited by Ibn Battuta, but Admiral Cheng Ho and Marco Polo also recorded his reports about Aceh.
