Are
Are (container made of bamboo, in Gayonese is called are; in
Alas is called selup) is a container made of bamboo used to
measure grains. It also becomes a standard measurement
unit for daily transaction as for buying salt, asam sunti (dried Averrhoa
bilimbi), and melinjo (Gnetum gnemon). Besides used for
measuring grains, are is also used to measure Zakat Fitrah (obligatory
alms paid in Ramadhan). While filling are for Zakat Fitrah,

I thought we had that in the village during my childhood days but it was shorter. It was like a wooden bowl instead of looking like a mug but we use it for fetching water from the jar. My old folks were saying its content is more refreshing because of its natural material. Though as I grew older, I realized the challenge to that is when the wood starts to deteriorate.
We did not have that belief though of not putting it upside down. 😊
