West monsoon winds
You see a big lump of cloud that was above the island, which looks like a UFO? Just a few days ago, I took this picture, when passing at coast of Banda Aceh, capital of Aceh, in Sumatra.
The cloud was certainly brings the water vapor of this magnitude. But where it comes from and where it is going?
It came from the Indian Ocean in western Aceh or the island of Sumatra. And who has bring it here? The answer is the monsoon, precisely, west monsoon winds.
And this is what we want to talk about it to be an explanation for the images showing weather conditions in the region. Weather like, normally, will continue to frequent since October to March. This is called by the people who live on the islands of Southeast Asia as the rainy season.
The occurrence of the monsoon, both the monsoon west or east the monsoon, especially related to the position of the sun over the hemisphere. And the weather, as we see in these pictures is due to west monsoon winds that are blowing from the Asian continent to the continent of Australia starting in October until March.
West monsoon winds occur due to several factors, and the first one is because the position of the sun is in the southern hemisphere. Because of that, the hemisphere is more sunlit is the southern hemisphere, in the Australian continent. It makes the Australian continent higher temperature, and will have a lower pressure than the Asian continent at a lower temperature with higher pressure.
The air, then, moving from the area of high pressure to low pressure area, then monsoon winds moves from the Asian continent heading to the Australian continent. The wind blowing through the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean is vast, so it contains more water vapor, and there was the rainy season in most parts of Southeast Asia, and scenery like in pictures will often be seen in months of October to March.
West monsoon winds will bring many advantages, among which are fertility, but on the other side also brings disasters, such as floods and landslides.

One more important thing, to keep in mind about this monsoon winds, is in ancient times, this wind has played a major role in shipping and maritime trade. Because of the discovery of this wind, people from different parts of the eastern and western world have been able to sail more regularly from time to time between the east and west and get a great advantage for their countries.
The word "monsoon", it seems, comes from an Arabic word meaning "season". This word is the word most often used to refer to seasonal changes in wind direction that occurs along the coast of the Indian Ocean, particularly in the Arabian Sea, which blow from the southwest within half a year, and then from the northeast to half a year else. A legend says that Hippalus was the first Greek used monsoon winds to sail along the Indian Ocean. But the people of Yemen was already used monsoon winds to sail in the Indian Ocean.
