Meugang: The Tradition of Eating Meat 3 Times a Year

in #aceh6 years ago

Meugang. Have you ever heard it? If not, I will explain it.

Meugang is a meat-eating tradition in Aceh, the western tip of Indonesia. Meugang is held 3 times a year. The first time is done one day before the month of Ramadan, then one day before the Idul Fitri and Eid al-Adha.

Meugang aims to equalize the populatione between people in Aceh on the glorious day of Islam. In the days that I mentioned above, all Acehnese people will eat meat in their homes, both rich and poor.

At that time, men will buy meat in the market and then be taken home to their parents' homes or to their children and wives. If a woman only lives alone because her husband has died, then her brother will deliver the meat to the house.

The very big impression on meugang day is that rich and poor eat the same food, so that it does not cause jealousy in the hearts of the people. Besides that, meugang is also a tradition of the people in welcoming the holy month and holidays.

Even more interesting, every Acehnese who are abroad and out of town will miss their homes very much when they are on their day. In fact, not infrequently they will shed tears, the cry is not because of food, but meugang is also a day of gathering family members in their respective homes.
