Traditional Acehnese cigarettes
This is a traditional Acehnese cigarette. We call it 'bakong' Gayo. As the name suggests, this tobacco is made from natural tobacco grown by farmers in Aceh on their plantations.
In addition to Gayo, Central Aceh region, tobacco leaf production is also found in Teupin Raya, Pidie, Aceh. This natural tobacco production can also be found on the western and southern coast of Aceh.
Although there are many tobacco plantations owned by residents in Aceh, but some mention Gayo tobacco has a distinctive taste so different than other regional tobacco production.
In addition to natural tobacco, Aceh also has abundant nipah that is often used to roll the tobacco.
In the past, I often saw parents smoking this type of cigarette. We call it rukok on, which means a leaf cigarette because it is rolled using a nipah leaf.
Now, lovers of this type of cigarette is reduced. Very rarely do we see smokers who roll natural tobacco like this in Aceh, especially the capital region of the Government of Aceh. Even if there is, they are more fond of using paper as tobacco pads. No longer using the nipah leaves as before. Yup, like this style of my friend.
