Summer and the AC
During the summer I don’t expect to carry a shirt or jacket with me. However, many times I need one because it is slightly chilly indoors. No building is safe. I have needed a jacket in restaurants, coffeeshops, offices and libraries. I have talked to friends about this and many report that they also wish it was warmer. Why do so many businesses blast the air conditioning?
A professor at the University of Sydney told the New York Times in 2015 that despite employee complaints, many offices keep the temperature uncomfortably cold in the summer as a form of showboating. A 2010 study by Cornell Scientists found that not only does this lead to employee discomfort, but it also makes computer workers less productive.
Keeping the temperature a few degrees higher saves money on the energy bill and is better for the environment. I'm not suggesting keeping it uncomfortably hot indoors but logically we shouldn't be cold indoors when it is 90 degrees outside.
