Abuse Series: Playing Solitaire
Self-voting: a sometimes controversial topic on the platform. On principle, there is nothing wrong with appreciating or supporting your own work, especially if you have the stake to enhance their visibility. On the other hand, how much is too much?
Some of you may be familiar with @sadkitten, an AI (bot) that scans the blockchain for excess self-votes and attempt to counter them until voting pattern changes. The program is developed by @transisto and @personz in an attempt to correct behavior from the bottom up on the platform.
For many people, when we mention self-votes, a lightbulb immediately shines on the infamous whale, @haejin. Let's take a look what he has been up to lately.
Hmm, seems typical of what he does with @ranchorelaxo. You would think he should be the prime target. Well, Rancho doesn't post, so it doesn't matter. Let's see what our analysts actually does on his posting account.
Are you surprised? His self-votes is actually in the low 80's in the last week. I think most of us did not see that coming. I know I didn't.
I liken excessive self-votes as playing Solitaire. You don't interact with anyone or anything, but yourself and the bare necessities on the blockchain. So again, how much is too much? Here are some gems I have found through the @sadkitten.
Is it 97.30%?
Is it 99.40%?
Or, is it Self-vote Nirvana? 100%
Geez, that man has reached Nirvana. I don't think I could ever be as enlightened as that person. He needs a medal.

Again, self-voting by itself is not a bad practice as the code allows it. It is my personal belief that when it becomes a game of Solitaire, we may have a problem. Social media should be "fun and interactive"; to quote an overused Blizzard joke.
If you want to do things yourself, I would suggest you go for the traditional mining route. Then again, it's an open platform. You may do as you wish. Just remember:
You are free to do whatever you want, but you are also free to receive all consequences.

Self voting is born out a platform with more bot accounts than real traffic and less engagment and a dreadful new user retention. If Steem wasn't a cryptocurrency this site would be dead a long time ago. If curation was actually fair and what it says on the tin then self voting wouldn't be too much of an issue minus the bad actors you mentioned who would not play community fair anyway.
It's too bad really. Those who have the powers to influence change don't seem to be set on it.
It was never an equal playing field from the start.

95 percent of the posts HERE on steem do NOT get any up votes and yet
AS FOR SELF VOTES you said you target from the very bottom up ok then every one knows the very bottom are the minnows which post things here on steem and 99.999999999999999999 percent of the time unless they themselves up vote their own post they will not get anything for their own post and when the pot is given out the minnows would be very , very lucky to even get a a single one cent, aka a penny. alot of work and time for lest than a penny worth of pay.
and yet to @personz and @transisto who made the sadkitten bot to go after and target those same little minnows here on steem in order to rob those minnows of the penny that they may make, talk about greed at it worst. that is what this is all really about,
ALSO as for the big boys on steem aka the whales all have multi accounts in which they post on and up vote their other accounts, in order to get a big share on the reward pot. also those same whales most dod have agreement with other whales to upvote each others post as to increase they pot share and that is ok with all the whales, after all as long as they get more to hell with everyone else.
theythe whales thinking is those little minnows how dare they even try to earn even a penny of the pot after all that is a penny we should earn, so lets hit them with bots and teach them a lesson in greed that will show them who really is greedy here on steem. after all them we can sell the steem for really money to all the other suckers and fools out there in the world and cash in, and be rich, and that is all that steem trading is all about, steem is said to be where anyone can make it and yet, the real truth is only a very select few and to hell with everyone else, that is the cold hard facts and truth about this steem
those that created the sadkitten bot who targets minnows may even make the excuse to say well we are just trying to get people who do up vote to make sure that they up vote others people to. well that does not work and will never work. you can now make people up vote things that they have no interest in or like. so again the very cold hard facts and truth are what was said above . as to why there really is a sadkitten bot, simple greed and nothing more. get every penny you can from the minnows and to hell with them all.

Several things:
@sadkitten doesn't even counter 100% of their vote value.
Community culture requires shaping from the bottom up. The top won't go anywhere any time soon, but the bottom can easily proliferate.
If 10k SP is "massive", then you have never seen a whale.
It's not that hard to earn as a minnow/plankton. You need to interact. This is a social medium. There are plenty of people making Steem through whatever communities/initiatives they chose to involve in. Examples include #steemchurch #ulog #esteem, etc. Hell, just head over to PAL and get yourself a $0.10 upvote every 36 hours.
If the people highlighted in this post are what you call "poor minnows", then they only have themselves to blame.
Finally, you obviously have no idea how the Steemworld infographics are made. These 97% self-voters literally don't give a flying zip about ANYONE around them. Be glad that they aren't whales. They make @haejin look like a saint.
I think that curation improvements would help out a lot too.

This is correct. That's why just looking at self voting percentages doesn't tell the whole story.
For example if you voted once on your account and it was a self vote, you would be a 100% self voter but @sadkitten wouldn't care very much about you then.
But if you self vote on your account every couple of hours and not for anyone else then it might look at you.

The bot looks at behavior of all accounts, regardless of SP. So minnows and whales are both looked at.
To avoid down votes all anyone has to do is self vote less, that's all there is to it.
You're right about one thing, many accounts which are acting selfishly use alt accounts and circle voting. We're working on a solution to this too and you can expect it in the next month or two.
how about this have you sadkitten box only target those that have a high dollar amount self vote say a way above 1.00 dollar and above and that way all of us minnows are left alone, who can only up vote a few penny's if it does not stop all you are doing in helping the whales, this bot will force people to leave steem and you can not make people vote on something that they do not like which is what this bot is trying to force people to do too, people will vote only on things they like and not when someone is trying to force them, if you want steem to grow the remove sadkiiten or make a change to only go after high dollar self votes and you can see here below i self voted it is 2 cents and sadkitten a whale with (+9,951.833 STEEM) and everyone knows that 95 percent of all posts made on steem do not get any upvotes so tell us all why someone should not upvote their on posts
When 97%+ of all your outgoing votes are to yourself, I don't think you can claim that no one is interesting. Sounds like excuses.

Where are you pulling the stats? Out of your ass? Do you know how to read? I guess not because you are saying self vote is 100% bad when I asked the question "at what point is it bad."
Leave your narcissism at the door. If you are satisfied with giving yourself 0.02 STU per comment, that's your gig. There are plenty of others your size and smaller making more than that just by being part of the community they chose to be in.
You probably can't even name 5 communities where you could find support for your contents.

The problem with that is that there is a very widespread scam using new accounts, which are technically minnows. The size of the account doesn't determine anything really, it is the behavior. You have really self vote a lot to be of any interest to the bot, so if you're doing that it's not so unexpected that you would attract negativity.
Steem's growth is in large part dependent on making it unwelcome for scammers.

Here at @steemflagrewards, we actively look out for such circle jerking and start zero-ing them out. We aren't always successful due to SP limitations.
