Hear the Story of Jokia the Elephant: On a Tragic Story and How to Be a Real HeroinesteemCreated with Sketch.

She's a 55-years old elephant who is recovering from a tragic past. I met Jokia in my trip to Thailand and I also want you to hear her story.

Previously, she is abused by her monster owner who forces her to carry logs up to the mountain every single day. The owner doesn't know that she is pregnant, and one day as Jokia tries to carry the logs up the hill, she gives birth to her baby, but tragically her baby falls down the hill and dies. Horrified and devastated Jokia refuses to carry logs at that point, and for the punishment her angry owner blinds her, poking her eyes out.

A true heroine, named Sangduen Chailer, hears the story of Jokia and she strives hard to save her, finally buying her from the owner and bringing to the rehabilitation park she has founded.

Sangduen Chailer is a powerful woman who wanted to rescue elephants which suffer from physical and psychological injury due to their forced work in logging industry, street begging, circus shows or touristic exploitation, and she founds "Elephant Nature Park" in Chiang Mai. The park is kept alive by the eco-tourists who donate to the park, feed the elephants and help them have their daily baths. There are also dozens of rescued abused and injured cats, dogs and buffalos in the park. This is not an elephant "zoo", this is a sanctuary where abused elephants reclaim their wild nature in the park, they're also trained to be human-friendly only by positive reinforcement, never by punishment.

Here we are helping Jokia having the daily bath. She's a very happy elephant now and is already partly recovered from her traumas. For the rest of her life, she'll be safe and happy, socialising with caring people and her fellow elephants. Sangduen Chailer shows us how to be a real life heroine; and we do not need superpowers for that, other than having love for all the living creatures.

7 months ago, I've heard that Jokia lost her best friend, Mae Perm the elephant, and mourned for long. Elephants are such emotional and intelligent creatures, they do mourn for the loss of her beloved ones. If you search "Jokia the Elephant" on Youtube, you'll find many videos of her grieving. Nevertheless, I still want to show you her happy times, because death and mourning are inevitable; yet there ARE other things which we may avoid for causing harm and suffering for such beautiful beings: Do not support ivory products, and do not participate in events (circuses, elephant-ridings, shows) where they are abused for the entertainment of people. Let them live in peace and happiness in a place to which they belong:
