ESAN MARRIAGE CULTURE

in #aboutmyculture6 years ago

Hello everyone!
My Name is Ediale Bright.
I am writing about the marriage culture in my land "Esan Marriage Culture".

I am from Edo state in Nigeria, Irrua in Esan Central precisely.

It's a great opportunity to write about the marriage culture in Esan, Edo State.
Esan is one of the most cultured community in Edo State, Nigeria which is guided and supported by the Nigeria constitution for effective adherence.

The Esan people ( Esan : Ẹ̀bhò Ẹ̀sán ) are an
ethnic group of south Nigeria who speak the
Esan language . The Esan are traditionally
agriculturalists, trado-medical practitioners,
mercenary warriors and hunters. They
cultivate palm trees, Irvingia gabonensis
(erhonhiele), Cherry (Otien), bell pepper (akoh)
coconut, betel nut, kola nut, black pear,
avocado pear, yams, cocoyam, cassava,
maize, rice, beans, groundnut, bananas,
oranges, plantains, sugar cane, tomato,
potato, okra, pineapple, paw paw, and various
vegetables.

I choose this topic "Esan Marriage Culture"
because it's a well pronounced traditional value in Edo State, Nigeria.
Esan family value their offsprings, this is the reason compare to some
cultures; the bride price is very low.
The payment of bride price is important to
the conclusion of marriage notable
under Esan native law, which like any
other law of marriage in
Nigeria; it is recognized under the
Marriage Act.

Another reason I chose this topic is because I want to establish the point that
the impression being that our people (Esan people)
do not give out their daughters on sale in
marriage, the accepted amount for
bride price is usually; N24(Naira)
(representing 24 cowries or British
pounds used in the pre-colonial and
colonial days).

A plenty sum is presented these
days, from which the prominent
members of the bride’s family would
take a little amount and refund
the balance to the groom for his wife,
their daughter`s up keeping.

My culture is special to me and to everyone who is from Esan land because it's always a good experience where the culture is being practiced face to face and you gain more experience to know more about your culture which you can never forget and can always teach your children about it.
It is also important to us because marriage is one way we can sell our cultural life to other ethnic groups who come to us for marriage. In other words, it's a way of promoting our cultural values to others.
