My cultural topic is about the devotion, love and compassion of filipino people by the Black Nazarene Festival.

I chose the Black Nazarene as my cultural topic because it’s one of the most popular and the biggest religious procession in our country. It is indeed a very special event for every filipino devotees and also for all those people who believes in his miraculous deeds.

Brief Description
The statue was brought to Manila by a Spanish priest in 1607 aboard a ship. The ship caught fire, burning the image and that's why it’s known as the Black Nazarene. A life-sized, dark wooden sculpture of Jesus Christ carrying the cross. Many Filipino Catholics believed it to be miraculous because it’s represents his passion and suffering.

The Black Nazarene Festival or most filipino called it “Itim na Nazareno” Festival is happens every year, held every 9th of january at Quiapo, Manila Philippines.
It is one of the highly anticipated celebration events. The main highlights of the festival is the ceremonial transfer or we called it as “Traslacion” of the old Black Nazarene from Quirino Grandstand in Luneta to its home inside the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Quiapo. It is witnessed by millions from all over the world that gathers all over the streets of Quiapo.

The celebration starts in the open door of Quiapo Church. Devotees start to yell “Viva Señor” while some wave white towel high in the air along with the scripture of the Black Nazarene when the image of the Black Nazarene is within sight. The statue is placed in a carriage for the procession, volunteered participants grab two long ropes and pull it to make the carriage move. While many will attempt to touch and kiss the image because it is said that miraculous things will happen in you life.

This event is special for me and to my culture because as a filipino citizen it is a is long time practice of the Filipino Catholics and we believed Jesus Christ through his faith and love for us. It also said that there will be long life and good health among people, prosperity, joy and love among nations, and most of all peace and harmony among families.
