What Marvel Got Wrong With the Incredible Hulk - Part 4

I said in part 3 that the conflict and struggles between Bruce and the Hulk are the wrong way round, let me explain.

This scene from the 2003 Hulk is one of my favourite Marvel moments and perfectly captures the relationship between the two characters.

To summarize bother characters feeling about the other at this point we have Banners -

· Monster
· Not part of me
· Fear

And from the Hulks point of view, we have -

· Puny Human
· Not part of me
· Rage

This is a perfect example of the conflict that makes the hulk such an interesting, flawed and unstable character.

Bruce’s fear of letting the hulk truly out is because he sees the hulk as a different thing entirely and this is why the mirror scene is so epic because he is the hulk and the hulk is him. The anger and rage that the hulk possess is the internal mirror that he must accept as an unbreakable part of himself. Only when Bruce truly excepts this, embraces it and maybe even enjoys it will he realize that to keep the anger, the rage and fury in…. he must let it out.

Before Endgame I didn’t know what the catalyst would be to get Bruce and the hulk back working together but my two ideas involved Black Widow.

I thought that Natasha would be the key to this. Her life would be in danger and it will be the first time that both Bruce and the Hulk feel the same way about something or someone, there feeling for each other will be secondary to the current situation and they will work together thus aligning both personalities.

Or an even better one....

Black Widow’s life is in danger and the only reason for this is because Bruce is holding back not allowing the hulk to come out. This ulitmalty leads to her death. The reason she died was because Banner was too scared to let the hulk out. The pain banner would feel, the guilt and the anger. As the emotions between banner and hulk align so do the character from two into one. The result…… is an incredible hulk.
