Annihilation (2018) - Review
If the pace is slow, this sensation is counterbalanced by the beauty of the landscapes and special effects . These are perfectly successful. The quality of the photography is impressive. It's impossible not to be amazed by this film, at least for the quality of the details.
Personally, I did not find the film too slow. I was so in search of clues; I was trying so hard to understand what was going on: to understand the why of how , how I did not see the time pass. The thriller and mystery aspect quickly takes over the terror. Moreover, the scenes interspersed with flashbacks are welcome and bring as much rhythm as depth to the main characters: Lena and Kane, but also a better understanding of the story in general.
Annihilation is clearly a film where you should not put your neurons on hold (or in the closet) to be able to: not be bored and understand the story (especially and especially the end). So intellectual that production has been reluctant to revisit the film to make it more affordable to the people (which they have not done, thankfully). Finally, following strong negative criticism in test screenings, it was finally decided to propose it indoors only in the USA, China and Canada. Besides, I explain to you a little further the end of Annihilation.
The themes are not new but the film brings a new vision, a new approach presented in many ways to viewers. Well done Alex Garland! I still often think about this movie that I watched a moment ago now.
In short, I absolutely loved Annihilation. I would almost tend to put it at the level of a masterpiece, as it is aesthetically beautiful, the scenario brings reflection around life and our knowledge, all carried by a cast of excellence.
