Whenever I come across a movie that tells something I'm not completely familiar with or that I've simply never been interested in, I make an effort to see it so that little by little I can expand my knowledge through entertainment. However, with this movie something very strange happened to me, I bought it on Blu-ray and I never saw it because I thought I wouldn't like it, I always left it as my last option, however recently I found out that HBO was broadcasting it so I decided to finally give it a chance, and what a surprise I got because I loved it.

To give you more context, I've never been interested or even seen anything related to ice skating, something that is the main focus of this movie, and what a surprise because after seeing it I realized how intense are the competitions.

Competitive ice skater Tonya Harding rises amongst the ranks at the U. S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the sport is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes.

This film focuses mainly on the journey of a young skater trying to go to the Olympics and be the best ice skater, a young marginalized, poor and with little class that no one in the sport wants to consider no matter how talented she is, a young girl who is constantly left out for being considered "white trash".

The movie starts showing us Tonya's initial journey to become and focus her life on being a skater, a skater who never receives credit for what she does and on the contrary is constantly criticized by members of the society of ice skaters, but especially by a mother who only sees her as an object, a mother who beats her, mistreats her and despises her constantly. That's why Tonya is a rebellious young woman and somewhat damaged that only serves to skate.

But let's put Tonya's traumas aside because that's not what's important at the moment. The really important and entertaining thing begins when Tonya falls in love with a man, a man who at first takes her out of the emotional hole to which her mother threw her, a man who supports her and gives everything for her, in short with this man Tonya really manages to improve her life, until the beatings begin and their relationship becomes toxic to the point of turning into a constant ups and downs in which the girl is trapped, while also dealing with the denigration of a sport that does not want or accept her.

However, after so many ups and downs in her relationship Tonya decides to concentrate on her career and finally manages to make a maneuver that no other skater was able to do, so she classifies the Olympics and becomes one of the best ice skaters in the United States. Until his boyfriend intervenes and ruins everything with an act of "love" that complicates Tonya's career and takes her back to an abyss she can't get out of.

The most entertaining part of the movie comes after that "act of love" because it will unleash a stupid web of lies that will make many funny moments happen and where the madness and contempt will make an act of presence again to give more life to the plot.

This is a story that stands out for the way it is told, the creators tell us the facts through testimonies and real scenes of the facts making us have a more familiar feeling of the plot so that we understand everything perfectly. Throughout the film we realize that the criticism of a sport where women are seen as objects is very huge and is made in a funny way.

Margot Robbie - Tonya Harding

Margot Robbie has become in recent years one of the best actresses, demonstrating that she is capable of playing all kinds of roles, nothing is big for this actress and in this film makes it clear again. Her interpretation of Tonya is perfect, with each scene we see how well she managed to develop and embody a wild woman, broken inside and with emotional problems that come from a dysfunctional childhood where she had little love from her mother. This actress manages incredibly to give life to a woman who does not give up and that regardless of the blows she receives is ready to stay up.

The way she is able to unite all the cast is fantastic, each person in the film needs Margot Robbie to work, because she is the center of everything, she gives all the meaning to the film, and not only argumentally but literally, the scenes that are without her stand out little and only make us want to see her more for how well she embodies Tonya, even with choreographies brilliantly executed where she demonstrates her versatility as an actress.

Final thoughts.

I highly recommend this movie because it deals with uncommon topics that will make us open our eyes to very frequent abuse issues in women's sports where the participants are judged for things they shouldn't and that are often despised for how they look no matter how much talent they have.

A funny story of something as serious as the premeditated attack on a sportswoman told in a fantastic way through testimonial scenes of the protagonists that give us a clearer sense of reality.
