Movie Review #34 ALLIED

in #aaa5 years ago

Robert Zemeckis is always going to be one of my favorite directors, because I love the way he tells stories, making the most of every narrative and technological resource he has available. With this film, Robert Zemeckis shows once again that with a good construction of characters and an interesting story any kind of film can be successful, no matter how much budget or technical effects it possesses.

The story basically introduces us to an English spy/intelligence officer who falls in love with a French woman while they both carry out some secret missions during the war period.

The story

Initially the story begins with two strangers who are together in Africa on a mission to bring down some of the Nazi organizational structures. Little by little we observe how with the passage of the minutes and after some moments of intensity and romanticism originated by the various missions of these two people, they fall in love and form a relationship that goes beyond the work interests of both, basically a love story in times of war.

As expected from the first meeting of the English spy and the French woman both end up falling in love, getting married and moving a little away from all the heat and conflict of the war to go to London to start a happy family. So far the plot advances magnificently with scenes incredibly romantic and full of subjectivity that convey the sensuality and understanding that both protagonists feel for each other.

However everything begins to crumble when the chief of the English spy tells him that they have received information about a German spy infiltrated in London and living with an English intelligence officer, basically that information collapses the world of the English spy making him suspicious of his wife to the point that he begins to have attacks of constant paranoia.

From that point the film transforms from what he had initially shown us, a love story in war times becomes a constant search for truth where our protagonist begins to doubt everything he loves in his life, putting himself at risk and facing situations that lead him to a kind of rampant madness, especially when he finally discovers that indeed everything in his life was false, and that his wife was indeed a German spy.

The performances

All the performances as a group stand out for the punctual way in which they mimic and adapt their characters to the climate of war, making the most of each scenario and each shot to make us believe in what we are seeing.

No doubt Brad Pitt's performance is (as always) a delight, giving his character initially a huge amount of confidence and seduction to then transform himself into a lost man who just wants to know what's really going on, if really everything he had built and loved was false. In addition to a Marion Cotillard who gives his character an intrinsic mystery that we can never decipher, and that does not let us know if she is really acting or if the love that was professed with Brad Pitt was true. The way she moves, in which her gestures combine with her dialogues make her performance the key point of the film.

The final

The film takes us on a path where despite lies and suppositions, love seeks to triumph. Two people who never should have been together end up in love in such a way that despite political impositions they seek to be together even when lies come to light.

A story very well carried that takes full advantage of the performances of the actors to give us an interesting plot that keeps us in suspense until the end. A movie that gives us an emotional ending that reminds us that even when something starts wrong can end up being something positive.
