[AAA][Review #21] Men in Black: International

in #aaa5 years ago

It is depressing to see how directors and film studios refuse to turn the page with certain films, trying in several ways to revive them and return them to the glory they once had. The truth is that most of the times they try it they fail and make the memory we had of something good become tarnished.

With MIB happens exactly that, some years ago they tried to give it new life with a sequel using part of the original cast that was a total disaster, and recently they have tried again with a new story and characters, basically one of those many reboots that are becoming more and more common.

The Story

In previous movies we were aware of the premise that MIB was a super-secret organization that constantly recruited the best available candidates from different security agencies to make them members of its organization, to help protect the stability between humans and aliens, however this premise seems discarded since MIB no longer recruits anyone, now whoever wants to join must find them, or at least that's what happens in this movie.

The story begins with a woman determined to find the MIB to join them and turn her boring life upside down. "Surprisingly" and after a lot of effort, the girl gets into the MIB quarters where she is accepted and becomes a member of this super-secret organization. An organization that as first mission sends her to Paris to assist in a complicated case. Once in Paris the action begins, when a group of powerful aliens seeks to get a powerful device that is in the hands of a kind of extraterrestrial prince, the thing is that this extraterrestrial prince is a friend of one of the agents of MIB so he asks for help, help that this agent decides to give along with the rookie agent.

Finally as it was to suppose while both agents of MIB protect the prince they were attacked by another group of aliens and from then on a hunt is unleashed to get the powerful artifact.

To be honest the plot is flat and simple, it does not deserve to be approached in detail because it will fill you with spoilers. What is important to know is that the plot has a very fast rhythm and goes in several directions; we have on the one hand the search for the super powerful artifact, the love affairs of both agents, the constant escapes that our protaginists must make in each moment and the search for an infiltrator that is more than obvious. Hence the film is not very enjoyable, because of its predictable and uncreative plot, nothing makes this story end up taking off or rather it does but does not stay in the air.

The MIB Agents.

As for the agents something very strange happened to me, I couldn't forget their performances in other franchises, they always ended up reminding me of Thor and Valkyrie, both actors don't completely detach themselves from their characters in the marvel cinematographic universe, they don't seem to have really developed their characters, both look uncomfortable and meaningless.

Chris Hemsworth basically performs a Thor dressed in a black suit and who is now fighting against aliens, we don't see a real change in his personality, he acts and behaves exactly like Thor, he has moments of seriousness but generally behaves in a "funny" and somewhat silly way. I even thought that he was the infiltrator because even his friends say that his attitude has changed and before it was more serious.

On the other hand Tessa Thompson has moments where her personality is exchanged, we can see her shy and lost in occasions, and in the next scene see her acting in a brazen and strong way taking control of the situation. A character nuance that is not bad, but feels forced to fit into the plot.

One of the best performers in the film is Liam Neeson being the villain we all knew he was, an infiltrator who looks like one and acts like one, being understanding and harsh at his convenience. In addition to Neeson, Rafe Spall also does a very good job wearing the mantle of righteousness and looking like the one who always wants the right thing done.

Summary

This is a movie that looks unnecessary, that they shouldn't have done, or at least that they should have done better. They should have played a little more with the plot and not just filled it with special effects and CGI to make it stand out in some way. A movie that wasted a group of actors who could do better.
