Retro Film Review: Fall Time (1995)
Long time ago, while attending law school class, the author of this review heard the anecdote about famous Italian soccer player who had tried to pull a practical joke by staging a fake robbery of his friend's jewelry store. Unfortunately, the jeweler had been robbed before and when the fake robbery began he pulled the gun, killed his friend and later had this incident ruled as a justifiable homicide in the court of law. I was reminded of this anecdote in the beginning of Fall Time, 1995 thriller directed by Paul Warner. The plot is set in American Midwest in 1958 and deals with three 18-year old boys who have just finished high school. They plan to make a huge practical joke by dressing as gangsters and staging mock robbery and murder on the town's main square. Unfortunately, their prank coincides by more complex and more real bank robbery plan designed by former convict Florence (played by Mickey Rourke). When boys cross path with Florence and his cohorts, result is the series of bizarre and sinister events and the boys begin to deeply regret having such an unusual sense of humour.
Fall Time, with its series of bizarre situations, perverse characters and huge amounts of violence, could be viewed as one of many low budget films influenced by Tarantino. Unfortunately, screenwriters Steve Alden and Paul Skemp lack Tarantino's sense of humour and director Paul Warner tends to overemphasize "cool" MTV-style editing, at times making the on-screen events as confusing to the audience as to the characters in the film. The acting is at times very good, especially in the case of Mickey Rourke and Stephen Baldwin, while Sheryl Lee of Twin Peaks fame is terribly disappointing, thus adding to the generally negative impression of Fall Time.
