Beforeigners - First Impressions

in #aaa5 years ago

Few times I dare to see productions made in Europe especially if they do not have a known history creating good products, however a friend recently told me about this series made in Norway with a very interesting plot, with settings and a design of incredible characters so I decided to give it a chance and let me tell you that she was right, although I have only seen a couple of chapters the series has totally caught me.

Overall

This is a series that initially sets us in a not so distant future where by some kind of unknown phenomenon different people from past eras have begun to appear and establish themselves in the present time, people who bring with them a great ethnic diversity that stands out in each chapter by the different culture clashes that occur constantly. The great thing is that initially the series does not stay or focus on trying to explain this phenomenon that has caused people from different eras to appear but takes advantage of it to develop independent plots, plots very well cared for and with a wonderful aesthetic.

Another outstanding and different aspect of this series is that it develops its plot in an unusual city, a typical European city that offers us very good scenarios to explore and have access to complementary landscapes very well used. All this phenomenon of time travelers collapses in Oslo a city that has become used to these new temporal migrants and sees its streets full of them, something that gradually begins to generate discontent in the usual residents and therefore creates problems of all kinds.

Beforeigners First Impressions

Entering more in detail with the firsts chapters of the series we have that already these time migrants are more and more familiar and therefore have begun to form part of the usual society of Oslo getting to share all sorts of jobs and tasks with normal citizens, hence a couple of police officers consisting of a Viking and a policeman of the current era are forced to investigate in detail a series of really strange crimes and murders that have been occurring throughout the city and is constantly beating people from other eras.

From these murders we will see how in this chapter develops a relentless search for the culprits, a search that will generate some chaos among the inhabitants and even among the police who will often be confronted by their very different opinions, each wants to investigate and follow clues in their own way without taking into consideration the other, beyond whether they are right or not each wants to enforce his opinion above all no matter where it has to go.

The chapter is really good because it gives us a glimpse into an incredible world, a different world and where everything happens strangely, a world full of mysteries that is now disturbed by a series of murders and secret societies that want to form a kind of supremacy of races. The series undoubtedly has a lot of social background, making constant criticism of the situation that often affects immigrants, because as happens with anyone who goes to another country we see how these time migrants have to endure all kinds of abuses and prejudices for the simple fact of not belonging to a time that is not the present.

At least the couple of chapters I've seen have made me expect a lot from the photography work and especially the direction, because it has at its disposal incredible landscapes and scenarios where the natural beauty and gloomy scenes typical of the Nordic countries proliferate; so it is to be expected that the shots and the productions in scenes are very well developed, and in fact the first chapter is a sample of how well they can do it, in a proposal that without so much commotion can become a great series.

Hey @anomalogy - sounds like an interesting show. I'll have to take a look for it online, do you know if the first season as a whole has been released yet, or are they doing a traditional releasing format seeing as it's HBO? Not too sure if they'll do the more common (and much preferred...by me anyway) method of dropping the full new season all in one go -- it definitely confirms any of my opinions on a particular show being worth watching or not if I notice all of a sudden that I've managed to binge stream through the first 4, 5 episodes without a hitch. It's happened more times than I'd care to admit.

Also, as an aside - I know that while your hesitations regarding European-based production work on film/TV series (especially the latter) is somewhat deserved, given a lot of the poor output in years/decades past as well as the former limitations of creating for a much smaller, restricted audience(s) on low budgets with no star talent most of the time and for a part of the world - most of Europe - with people who until rather recently didn't watch much electronic media in general, particularly TV though, compared to somewhere like America.

However, times have certainly changed for the better over the last 10-15 years. Very much so in the past couple of years, in particular. One of the hands-down all time BEST original television series, in my opinion as an ardent lover of cinema/storytelling/film making and someone who has logged an innumerable number of hours (easily many tens of thousands) all of the various aspects that must be executed perfectly in order to call a film or a television series truly GREAT...is the German-produced series "Babylon Berlin" - which was/is the most expensive television series ever made, and it shows in the impeccable quality of production design/set design, accuracy of even the smallest details throughout the series which is a period piece set in the interwar period in Weimar Germany, specifically in Berlin. Such a fantastic series, definitely recommend watching this one for sure.
