He was crowned sultan at the Indrapuri Mosque in 1878 until surrendering to the Dutch on 10 January 1903. He was exiled to Ambon, and last transferred to Batavia until his death on February 6, 1939. He is known as the Sultan of Aceh who reigns without a palace.
