The elephant and the jewel

Once there was a little elephant that left his mother and his aunts, and he went to live alone in the jungle. He walked around in the forest, and played in the river, and when the moon came up, he pulled up his trunk and trumpeted with joy. Now, one day, while walking in the jungle, he saw a man, and the man said, “Do not fear me. I bring gifts."

Then he gave him a deep green emerald.

He loved it and carried it on the tip of his trunk wherever he went. It was precious.

Then, one day, he met his mother and his aunts, and the mother saw that his eyes were not the same.

"Where do you keep it when you play in the river?” she asked.

"Why, I don't play in the river anymore."

"How do you trumpet with joy when the moon is up?"

"Why, I don't trumpet with joy when the moon is out."

Then she said, "My son, if this beautiful thing brought joy, man would be happy too."

So he dropped the jewel and played in the river, and when the moon was out, he trumpeted with joy again.
