My Biologist's Adventure #10 | How much you know about something? The C. Elegans story

in #steemstem7 years ago (edited)

Nowadays, we can see that every single day we are doing a better and find deeper knowledge towards the scientific research. The scientific research either aimed for the curiosity or to find the cure for the various types of cancer. That’s why we can see there are many exotic journals around the world regarding on the scientific research.

There are a few questions that we need to answer, Is the things that we can achieve in our mind or in the lab are limited? Or How much we know? There is some example of how much our knowledge can be expanded and how much it have been expanding.

Using the organism model in the biological research is very common. Normally, we are using mice, yeast cells and also using primates for the research. By using these organisms everybody hopes to find something about our world that can gives advantage to the natural worlds and the human being.

Have you watch the video that I have share to you on the morning? Now, what do you now about Caenorhabditis Elegans or C. Elegans? For those who are not watch the video, C. Elegans is a worm and it is a transparent Nematode. This worm allowed us to explore more in the developmental of the genetic, cells and more in Biology. Not only that it also give us countless knowledge on the Apoptosis discoveries and also in the RNA interference. We know a lot of knowledge because of this worm. This is a worm that is used in the labs all over the world and it can be found in your back garden.

This an example I want to show you, when you think that you know about yourself, what the things that actually you now? Maybe, You know about your defect or You know every single mole on your skin! Well, let me tell you something, we know every single cell that lives in the Caenorhabditis Elegans as much as we have discover more in the worms.

What does it mean guys? As you know we all are originated from an act of syngamy right? We are origin from a cell. For this worm, they are different from us they can reproduce asexually as well, the reproduction that doesn’t need the stage of meiosis and also not need the formation of gametes. A lot of works need to be done to get all of our cells like now from the originally single cells.

C. Elegans

In adults males the C. Elegans has up to 1031 cells( Normally 959 in adult hermaphrodites). It is not a random number, but adults C. Elegans always have that numbers in their small body. This is the number of cells in the C. Elegans when it is not effected by genetic illness and condition. Not only the number of the cells in the C. Elegant that we know, but we also know what all the of single cells do in their body. Sound amazing right?

From this graph, you can see all of the cell division in a single cell, the adult organism, and the embryo. Every branching in the flowchart will doubles the quantities of the cells from the top to the bottom. Different functional department of the tissue that formed by the cell represent as the cluster of the cells. This is really impressive, we can track down all of the cells in the C. Elegans, early as from the starting embryo.Think twice if you thought that you know something about an organism. This is because you will never know as much as I just told you. Btw thanks for reading my short #story about C. Elegans. Keep following my adventure ! Below is the video of the C. Elegans embryonic development! Happy watching :)

SteemSTEM Community

This one also I love to write also guys. SteemSTEM is a community in Steemit, I am very proud with this community because @steemstem is encouraging people like me to promote and write about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics(STEM) postings on Steemit.Because of this also important things that we should know as our additional knowledge. If you want to post about , Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics please don't forget to add #steemstem at your tag .
