Take a look at the circle of galaxy clusters and voids surrounding us in this map of the nearby cosmos, extending 200 million light years in each direction.

The Milky Way is a galaxy that spans around 200 million light years. It consists of clusters of galaxies and voids, where there are fewer galaxies. The Milky Way is part of the Local Group of galaxies, and the Virgo cluster is our closest neighbor.

The Milky Way has a majestic spiral structure dominated by two main arms called Scutum-Centaurus and Perseus. It also has a central bar and our solar system is located on a smaller structure known as the Orion spur.

In terms of our position in the universe, Earth orbits the sun at a distance of 150 million kilometers, and the sun orbits the center of the Milky Way. Specifically, we are in the Orion arm, approximately 26,500 light years from the center.

The Milky Way is located in the Local Group of galaxies. Our nearest neighboring galaxy is Andromeda, which is about 2.5 million light years away. Currently, we are moving towards Andromeda at a speed of more than 100 kilometers per second, and in about 4 billion years, the Milky Way and Andromeda galaxies will collide.
