The cup hidden during the Second World War

On this occasion I will talk to you about a curious fact that happened during the Second World War and in which the World Cup was directly affected.

As we know, the football World Cup is a trophy that many people, some of whom are very greedy and not afraid to get it in a malicious way, are longing for. Earlier we saw that he was a victim of crime and that thanks to a miracle and a canine hero he was able to give himself to those who won it with great effort.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay in 1930, after which two more World Cups were held until 1938. The war in the Second World War broke out in 1939 and since then there has been great tension in the world of football. The cup was in the hands of the Italian Football Federation at the time, and as we Nazis know, the main authors of this war, not only had the aim of seizing all the countries of Europe, but also of acquiring treasures, jewellery, works of art and all kinds of objects of great value. It was obvious that the cup made of solid gold was one of the main pieces to be made.

At first the trophy was stored in a safe deposit box in a bank in Rome, but the vice-president of the Italian Football Federation, Ottorino Baassi, was not convinced that it was the best place to safeguard it from the ambitious German hands, so he decided to sneak it out of the bank and take it home.

We would all think it would make sense to keep it in a private safe, but this man did not think so, he thought that if they raided his house they would most likely look for such a vault and it would be easy for the Nazis to find it. It was then that he came up with the genius of keeping it in a shoebox, as a simple paper-wrapped cardboard box underneath his bed, was the place where the important and valuable trophy took refuge.

As was to be expected one day in 1941, several members of the Gestapo or Geheime Staatspolizei (Secret State Police), i.e. the secret police of Nazi Germany, came to his house to ask him about the location of the cup. Ottorino denied knowing the location of the cup and commented that the CONI (Italian National Olympic Committee), together with the Italian Football Federation, had surely sent her to another city in Italy where there was not so much German occupation, such as Milan, for example. After the interrogation these men searched some corners of the house but found no trace of the glass and left.

In 1943 the cup returned to the hands of the Italian Football Federation, which trusted the lawyer Giovanni Mauro, a football man, who later handed it over to his friend Aldo Cevenni, who finally hid it in his country house just outside Bergamo in Bembrate di Sopra.

Years later, the cup returns to FIFA, and is officially named the Jules Rimet Cup in honour of the president of this federation. And which is preparing for what would be the 1950 World Cup in Brazil.

This is how the Jules Rimet Cup managed to safeguard itself from the Nazi invasion. Thanks to an act of heroism that will always be remembered by World Cup players and fans.
