The Elephant

A behemoth of muscle and skin
A gentle beast that lives on the brink
A beast that's never committed sin
That's hunted for the ivory within

Humans are sick
Why do we destroy such beauty
These creatures are the biggest on land
But are slowly turning to sand

With only a couple thousand left
We need to end this skull theft
There must be change
Future generations won't see
The magnificence of these strange
Majestic giant beasts

I usually don't write about these types of things but I was at a zoo the other day and I saw elephants again, they are always one of my favorite attractions. I have seen them in the wild as well and they are truly beautiful.

I have a statue on one of the ledges above my desk that is an elephant with her calf and it just inspired this.

I love elephants ♥

Great poems! Still need to go to my country Sri Lanka to see some of these awesome creatures :)

Another great poem with special tribute to the elephant. It is sad that these innocent animals are hunted and killed for their tusks. We really have to stop all this insane killing and respect life more. Thank-you for sharing!

Yes, I love elephants and rhinos and its a shame that they are all going extinct.

Agreed, let us protect these gentle beasts :)

followed you btw :D

Thank you :D I returned the favor :]

Well said in verse. We have a zoo here no elephants any more though. Sad. A friend of mine years ago won a contest for naming an elephant we once had. She named it Kathy Shboom and won a children's bicycle from her winning entry. They used to use the ivory from the elephant for piano keys. I wonder when they stopped doing that. Again thanks for taking a stand. I upvoted.

Thank you! I own a piano that has ivory key, it's very old at least over 100 years. I love the feel but it's definitely not worth killing an elephant for it .

I like the word "slowly turning to or into sand"

These creatures are the biggest on land
But are slowly turning to sand

The symbol or figure of speech that was used is plain and yet is powerful enough to make sense that when they are gone just like the rest of us we turn in to sand!

Nice line!

Great one, i was just thinking that almost everywhere or everything that had an elephant on it success :p

Great poem...I love Elephants too!! Im working on an elephant sleeve :) image

Thank you very much!!!
